If we want to carry we have to go through the state police and get a permit. We have to articulate why we think we are in danger and need to carry. Being a correctional officer is not enough. We must go through the same process that any civilian would. At least that is what I have heard. I have not accually checked into it my self so I may be wrong.
And your whiney *** crybaby excuse would be....

I've had only minor "talking ****" happen, but Im out of my element and dont plan to engage over minor mouthing. When I go back to work and see these turds they dont seem to have that mouthing problem. although my car has been broken into and my explorer had acid poured on the roof. I have a rule, If you come at me or my family while Im off duty I will not stop firing until my weapon is dry, to me if you come at me while Im off that is malicious intent not to metion retalition for past action. I dont chance any of that stuff because people are crazy now days. There is a weapon on or near me at all times

I have a couple of thoughts on this....

Batman and I have always lived outside of his jurisdiction. Now that we are back in Georgia, he works in the same town that he covered, but again....we live outside of town for the specific reason in this thread. He does see a lot of people in town that he's arrested, those were his regulars.

The other thing I want to mention, which I think is funny, is that Batman (to me) is a very recognizable person. He has very strong features. So, for the life of me, I can't figure out why nobody recognizes him out of uniform. It's been like that everywhere. He'll walk up and talk to people that he's only spoken to while in uniform and they won't know who the hell he is. Go figure!!

There are some cops I know (that I rarely see) that I don't recognize right away out of uniform either.

A lot of other cops have told me that people that have arrested them don't usually recognize them out of uniform. I've even seen other cops that I have met before and then see them out of uniform and wonder where I've seen them before. Strange.

I here the City of Denver requires all city employees to live within their city limits. Includes fire and police. There aren't a whole lot of nice choices there.

We have only one residency "requirement" , be at work on time. We have 2 officers that live 25 plus miles away. In over 17 yrs here at this dept, I have never failed to make it into work during blizzards or hurricanes or whatever. I just leave EARLY when the roads are bad.

Portland is bordered on the north side by Washington State. A lot of local officers live over in Washington. They finally, recently, solved issues with officers driving home armed. There wasn't certain reciprocity before. There are definately no reciprocal off-duty police powers.

We can't even chase a vehicle into Washington State in hot pursuit for anything less than a felony and other than elude.

No no no you misunderstood me. It is wrong that you, as a corrections officer, have to go through all that just to carry off duty. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

My brother, a retired LEO, was on a business trip for his 2nd career. He was 900 miles from home. While in the airport car rental lot he ran into a mutt he put away 30 years ago. The mutt got huffy and the local PD got involved. Once they sorted things out, they took the mutt in and promised my brother that the mutt's attitude towards retired LEO's would be significantly altered. Professional courtesy.

I have run into people that I have locked up from the city. They like to come to the county to shop and one day I was furniture shopping with my wife and this guy comes up and says "Aren't you a knocker from the city?" (knocker is what they call narcotics police in the city) I said no and left immediately. He followed us out of the store so I had my wife go back into the store pier one and call for county help. I wasn't about to let him see my truck so I approached him.
From what he said I guess his brother is riding out a 5 year hitch and he remembers me from the courtroom. One thing I have to give the county police is that they handled the situation very well by escorting the guy and his girlfriend away so we could leave. The next day I had to report to our homicide unit which handles circumstances like these.
And yes we carry off duty. Our department also allows us to carry certain smaller guns so they are easily concealed when off duty. About two years ago our department had a detective who was getting gas late at night from a gas station and noticed that three guys in the pumps in front of him had a shotgun waving it around. He immediately called for uniformed police back up as one of the guys seen he had FOP plates. They all took off on foot and he started to chase them. Realizing he was outnumbered he returned to his truck and continued to talk on the telephone with our dispatcher. The a#$hole with the shotgun walked up to his back window and shot him in the head.
He was a tough S.O.B. and survived to convict the three guys on attempted murder of a police officer. They all got stiff sentences. About a year later this same detective was again off duty and was at bar leaving with his girlfriend. The guys brother who had shot him with the shotgun had gotten together with 2 friends and waited outside for a long time until they came out. As he opened the door, he was hit in the stomach with one holding the girlfriend back.
He was shot repeatedly even on the ground by this scum. An off duty unarmed security guard was walking home and witnessed this and scared them all away. The guard picked up the detectives gun and chased the gunman into a dead end alley where he was held at bay until our tac team could arrive. Thank god for the security guard. This a@#hole is now in the same place with his brother and we lost another damn good detective.
After this incident almost everybody carries off duty and immediately reports any off duty incidents that occur.
When its 6:00 in the morning don't answer the door, I would much rather smash it in.

Get smaller guns. Kel-tec makes a great tiny .32 . The guys on my shift will get on each other's *** if we all go somewhere and someone doesn't have their gun.

(And for the smart *** who asks, "What if you go drinking?"
My response would be, "Then we leave it in the car.")
I'm not prejudice, I hate everybody equally.
