    Traffic violation Question

Ok here is my story I was driving down to my dads house i was on I84. I was pointed at by a officer and i pulled over. Now he ran out in the middle lane to point at me scared the living crap outa me i might add. He then had me Back up on the highway so he did not have to walk. He then ask for my L and papers and all the good jazz. and i noticed he was not a state cop but a town cop from Sturbridge MA and he gave me a ticket and i read it before i pulled away it says estimated speed at 86mph I know i was going faster then 65 but i have bad U joints i would have had a few teeth shaken loose at those speeds. any way my main question is can a town cop pull me over on the highway with no state tropper there?

    Thanks Hunt

And to answer the question, one of our biggest freeway ticketers here is a town who also chooses to patrol the freeway.

I concur with the others, but want to add what a dumba$$ that cop is. We had a NYSP that used to stand at the side of the road and flag people down on the thruway - I've seen him do this several times. He was struck by a motorist who wasn't paying attention and severely injured.
Its not a smart thing for cops to do. One of these days it will backfire on him.

We have about 3 1/2 miles of Interstate Highway ( I-83) that go through our municipality. State Police have primary jurisdiction to handle any incident or crash there but we have enforcement authority as we choose. I may go out in the unmarked and clock people ( we only need .3 mile) for speeding etc. Some people ( like Motorcraft) think that we as muny cops have no authority on the " eye". I have even been passed while in a marked unit ! I just follow 'em, and write em.

We don't patrol the interstate but as long as it is within my jurisdiction, it is 100% fair game.

The Los Angeles School District has its own PD. They drive black and whites but the Police marking is very different from the LAPD's. Most people think they cannot give tickets on the freeway or anywhere for that matter, wrong. The cops love this because the uninformed blow past them on the street or freeway only to be written up by a "school cop".

When a officer becomes certified in their state they can write a ticket anywhere in that state that he/she is certified, depending on their departments policy and use of permission from the agency's jurisdiction that they are in. Also remember that alot of smaller towns city limits are unpopulated and not of a city setting, and a lot of highway's go through small towns, cities and such.

Thanks for the Info guys I have heard so many diffrent things about what poilce can and can't do..

While i am asking questions Why do cops just look at me funny or give me a few double takes when i drive in my parents cars or my 77 ranchero? But when i drive my ranger i get pulled over for anything small like having my tailgate down, snow build up over plate's plate light out? Is it because I am a teen or is it because of the way my ranger looks? Red 4x4 billet grill shaved gate tinted tails clear corners and 32's

BTW i saw another cop doing the walk out into traffic thing today on 290 scared the crap outa a few people. Please tell me why anyone would run out into traffic for any reason

Same in Oregon. I always carry a ticket book from the surrounding counties. Just because you are in the neighboring county, they think a Portland officer can't pull them over. What a shock. One of our traffic officers was on a long road trip out of city and got caught in a traffic jam. A driver thought he had no jurisdication so he passed him on the shoulder. The officer stopped him and radioed for a trooper to come down with the proper citation for that county.
