But the standing in the road thing...I see all kinds of traffic officers doing this. They do it to write tickets faster. They have their favorite spot and don't want to have to drive back to it and lose 'valuable time'. I think it is entirely dangerous.

Today, though, I had to do something similar:

I was doing RADAR in a school zone as part of our back to school missions (I look forward to these every year). I was parked at the curb like any other parked car radaring oncoming traffic. I got two vehicles coming at me with identical speed (38 mph). This is a posted school zone of 20 mph and there were kids everywhere. I wanted to pick off the first car so I bagan a U-turn with all my lights flashing. The second car was trailing the first by about 200'. As I began my turn, he slowed, but I could tell he had no intention of yielding to the lights. I was a little aggressive edging the nose of my car across the suicide lane. He simply swerved into the bike lane and continued (strike 2, since the speeding was strike 1).

I fell in behind the second car who then acted as though he was going to yield and began slowing to the curb. However, he was slowing at a very slow rate, but I began my pass to catch the first car as he was clear my lane and had plenty of room to stop at the curb. As I was passing, the second car, who was not slowing at a decent rate, approached some parked cars and swerved back into my lane (strike 3!). A quick manuever on my part avoided a collision. Apparently he had only wanted to slow and not stop as I passed. My partner and I were now pissed.

I got the first cat stopped, but exited my car very quickly to yell at the driver of the second car who was now attempting to pass me in the center turning lane. I purposely stopped in the middle of the through lane to stop him. He just figured he would go around. I yelled at him to pull it to the curb, which he did. My partner ran up and dealt with him while I dealt with the drive of the first car.

Both got tickets for 18 mph over in a school zone ($201) and the second driver got the additional failure to yield to an emergency vehicle -- in a school zone -- $349.

Ouch! My Sergeant said I should've added the careless driving violation for almost hitting us which would be an additional $349. My partner wanted to cite him for driving while stupid, but he was fresh out of rubber hoses.

Exactly Gdow. That is a fun one here in Oregon. One of our local cops was at the coast for training. He was out of "area" so people thought he couldn't write a ticket. He got a few people. Another fun one is when the cops come into the academy for training/teaching and people don't think they can be cited by them. Ahh, so funny. :D

Let's see, tail gate down isn't legal, obstructed tag isn't legal, the other stuff may or may not be legal depending on your state. When you start messing around with changing the color of your lamps/lenses you may be asking for it. In PA there is very little one can do in changing such colors. Not that many officer sknow how to enforce it but it is enforceable.

I don't like to go out in the middle of the road unless, I have my overheads on, am wearing my orange "police" vest and am not right around a curve.

As far as the pick-up goes...you madified it to get attention...you're getting attention. Where's the problem?

well the main problem with the attention is My ranchero has very load pipes no cop has ever said an thing about it it rides 3 inchs off the ground no one has ever said anything about it bu my ranger gets the attention being lifted i just don't understand.

But guys i know you are doing your jobs when walking out into the road but it can scare the crap out of the NON speeders just as much as the speeders when i saw the second cop do it i was doing 65 and that was the limit all i can say is it scared the crap out of me to see this dude running across my lane into the middle lane to point at a mini van

    DC,
If it works for you, then fine, but I think it is an accident waiting to happen. Why can't you just have a second car there to chase speeders?
The NYS trooper I saw stopping cars when he was parked on the side of the road was on a level stretch of highway with plenty of time to get the cars to pull over. He still was struck and thrown. Miracle he survived. I have not seen them doing this since.

BE CAREFUL!!!! I wouldn't want anything to happen to any of you out there.

I taled to a traffic officer who does it here. It's not on a highway. It's a 35 mph zone. he doesn't do it on the freeway. He says it has been safe for him, and he raises his productivity by 3 fold.

Well it's always safe.... right up to the first Volvo bumper you eat.

    Russian Roulette is safe........ until...................

His 35 mph zone thinking is really goofy. Why is he standing in the middle of the street flagging down drivers? Let me guess. Speeding? So he's palying bullfighter with cars doing what? 40, 50, 75?? I can see a wheelchair or a casket in his future.

Someone needs to tell his bosses to do their job and train him right.
