accidently squealing tires at stoplight = ticket!?

i was celebrating my 16th birthday tonight with 3 of my girlfirends, in my (new to me) '96 red sunfire convertiable. the top was down and we had music playin a little above average. nothin too bad tho. at a stoplight another sunfire pulled up to us with these guys in it who followed us from a parking lot. we did not know them, so when the light turned green i accelerated very quickly and my tires squealed very loudly...but i didn't exceed the speed limit. again- i've only drivin this car a few times, and am not accustomed to this- but of course a cop pulled me over and even with my explination- i got a ticket for excessive noise/tires. is this right? or can i easily have this removed?

later that night i saw the same cop pull over ANOTHER RED CONVERTIABLE...i think he was looking for a reason to pull me over...even tho i don't feel that was wrong. (could he have also done so because we had party hats on and were young girls??)

If you had any type of audience, then it can be construed as exhibition of speed. Since I don't know the totality of the situation, that is all I can surmise.

Its called stunting here, and if you ask me there was no reason for you to accelerate quickly like that. You were obviously "stunting" to the other driver.

In England that could of been construed as careless driving because whilst your tyres were attempting to grip the road you were not in control of the vehicle.

Around here that would probably be "exhibition of acceleration". You don't have to be going above the speed limit either. As long as you are accelarating at a speed considered to be more than necessary. Although I probably shouldn't be talking, I own a Trans Am, so I'm not exactly an exemplary model to follow :D

You already have your own car at 16? And you had a license??? AND you could drive after dark??
Damn, what city are you in - I don't ever want to be on the roads there!
Let me guess this scenerio. You and 3 other YOUNG friends are riding around in a convertible with party hats on, LOUD music going, and in a celebratory mood. A car full of boys pulls up next to you at a stop light and you start conversing. Not just one of you girls, but all of you. You were probably laughing and joking with the boys, and when the light turned green, you decided to show off a bit and accelerate fast. I would guess this is what the cop saw.
If you were really frightened of those boys, did you try to put the top up, avoid the boy's glances and ignore what they said? Did you show any signs that you were afraid of the boys, other than wanting to speed away? Or were you trying to look for the nearest police officer?

If you think this ticket was wrong, then go fight it in court. Don't use the excuse that since you saw the cop pull over a second red convertible, your ticket should be thrown out.

It isn't that we like to pull over red convertibles, it is rather that ( young) people in( any color) red ( any kind of car) convertibles do things to get pulled over.

Your excuse would have prompted me to say , if you can't control your car due to inexperience , than you shouldn't be driving. I'll be glad to call your parents to come pick you up.

It's called selective enforcement and it works quite well. I would have written you for laying drag. Kids need tickets. Pure and simple. So many kids think that driving is something they are entitled to, and that they should be able to drive any way they want. But nothing says, "slow down and grow up" like a $75 ticket...and it works pretty well. Since so many parents have no clue (and really don't want one) about what their kids are doing on the road, this helps keep them in check (somewhat).
so when the light turned green i accelerated very quickly and my tires squealed very loudly
Yep. That'll do it every time.
i've only drivin this car a few times, and am not accustomed to this

    Razzley,

Based on what you posted, I would probably have given you a pass with a stern lecture about your driving habits. I never forgot how I was once 16, and the joy of driving around in a car with my friends. Hopefully it was a good lesson for you.

That's one of the reasons why there are SO many more accidents by kids on the road than older drivers. Nip it before it starts to be a problem, that's my motto.
Spyman, are you actually a cop? You seem to make up your own laws as you go along.
So what that this poster is a kid? That means they are entitled to drive like an a$$?? By the same rights, if you caught an 80 year old woman shoplifting, you would let her go because of the heartache of having to live off social security and not being able to afford expensive stuff? Please, tell me how you would handle that situation.

I probably have more law enforcement experience than you, and don't have a problem exercising the discretion I have in vehicle code violations.

I don't recall implying that I make up laws as I go along. perhaps you merely disagree with my opinions? I also didn't say that teenagers were entitled to drive recklessly, did I? I said in the situation reported, I probably would not have issued a citation to the girl. Have you ever stopped someone for a traffic violations and not issued a citation?

Incidentally, how did you drive as a 16 year old kid?

I won't even respond to the ridiculous comparison of shoplifting, or petty theft by an adult to a 16 year old's driving style.

Razzley, happy birthday to you! This officer could've just given you one of the greatest birthday gifts you'll ever get. Remember the lesson and always be cautious of your driving. I know you were probably just having a little bit of fun, but remember that a car is incredibly powerful and a little mistake (or lack of control) can lead to your death. Please be careful.

BTW.....Did nobody else think that this last remark about the party-hat was not hysterical???

I would look at it as exhibition of speed. Not sure I would've ticketed you, but I definitely would've tailed you if not pulled you over.
