    Rifle- changing the registered name

Well i went to Oakland County Sheriffs department today to get a Licence to purchase a firearm. I am acquiring my dads 38 special(man i hate that thing), and im buying a glock.

My step father owns a Remington sportsman 78 bolt action rifle. He doesnt shoot, go hunting, or anything, he won it in a raffle many years back. He said i can put it under my name.

I asked the nice lady at the department and she said that police departments(at least in MI) do not handle rifles as far as registration goes. She honestly didn't know what to do, someone else gave me the number to ATF. He said maybe i can with them, unfortunatly that number doesnt work.

Im gonna try to find their number through the internet, but i figured id ask for some help at the same time, in case i reach a dead end with the ATF thing.

Also, say i do go to the shooting range, and they check the registration of the rifle, and it isnt in my name, how much **** am i or my step dad in?

Thank you, sorry for writing such a lengthy thread.

Why in the world would you like having to get permission from the Government to buy a gun? Do you honestly think that the bad guys go down to the local sheriffs dept and get permission to buy a gun? That makes no sense whatsoever.

The city closest to me requires a "Fireams Transfer Certificate" to purchase a gun (plus NICS, of course). They do this solely because they insert an administrative 7-day delay to enforce a 'cooling off' period.

It's a waste of time, really. Just a mile or two outside the city limit there are plenty of gun shops that will let you take your purchase today (dependant on NICS, again).

I would love to see the effect the 7-day rule has on both murder rates AND gun sales within city limits.

I prefer NICS to the waiting period, myself. I usually breeze the check but the first rifle I bought after 9/11 was delayed for 24 hours for a more thorough check before they approved it. Being an immigrant I guess I was flagged for a closer look. You know us British types, all suspicious and terroristy.

No, i know most criminals dont get their gun through any legitimate means.

What i should said was it should be harder to own a gun. By harder i mean every gun owner should be trained in shooting in some way. A gun safety course, and the basics of shooting. It bothers me to see so many people own a gun, and not know anything about it. My dad kept his gun in the lower sock drawer, fully loaded, and no safety. How many more people own a gun and treat it like a toy?

If a situation ever came where he needed to use it, hed most likely miss. He never fired it in the 10 years he owned it.

But this isnt an issue that ive come to a conclusion with. I am not so much debating, rather than giving my own opinion. Im open to anyones, maybe it would change my view, who knows. Maybe when i become a police officer my view will change, who knows.

The waiting periods do nothing but create victims.

I have never met a police officer who was opposed to citizens owning or carrying firearms. When I want to buy a gun I just go to the store, show my CCW, fill out the FEDS yellow form and leave with my new gun.

it will make them easier to confiscate if it is registered.

There is a strong push by certain groups in this country to outlaw all firearms.

Once you register your gun, if ownership were to be outlawed, then the government just has to look in their files, show up at your home and demand all of the guns you previously registered with them. Thank you very much.

It happened in the UK, and I believe in Australia.

Whether or not it will happen in the US is an argument I'm not going to get into. ;)

Criminals don't care if guns are illegal. Outlawing guns only takes them from law-abiding citizens.
