    How important is it...

That your friends and relatives are law abiding citizens?

You can pick your friends, but not your family.

Are you asking in relation to getting a job in LEO, or in general?

    Getting a job in LEO.

I am real hesitant to allow a certain individual I work with into my life as a friend. This person has been arrested for drug possesion and dealing drugs. This person also cannot get a DL untill the age of 25.

When I was much younger, I smoked pot once. And even then I dont think I was doing it right. I have had friends that were pot heads, for whom liked to hot box the GMC Jimmy while at the drive in. I only did that twice, before I said ehh..This aint for me. And I gracefully left that friendship.

Second question how important is it to have friends in regards to LEO career?

We dont have any friends. Between moving, and the fact Im a hard person to get along with regarding my political views and interests its not easy for my husband and I to find friends. LOL

We are stuanch conservative gun owners. I dont do girly things, and hubby could care less about watching a ball game.

    Thanks !

I don't know if this will help...

I usually have a big labor Day BBQ.

Some of my friends are cops.

Some like to smoke pot. (Some of the friends, not some of the cops)

I make sure that the pot smokers know that should they wish to get high, that they be discreet about it so as not to put anyone in an awkward position. (Perhaps going out behind the big shed)

I also let my cop friends know about this and the instructions given to the pot smokers. That way they have the option of not attending.

    And, for what it's worth...
The friends I have who smoke pot are the "casual user" kind who have real lives, real jobs, and are productive members of society.
In other words, the sort who can actually be trusted to behave in a responsible manner, and if they want to smoke a joint, actually WILL go off to the side and away from the party.

I don't have any friends who are in that "stoner/burnout/petty-criminal category, and if I did they certainly wouldn't come to one of my parties.

you are pretty much going to be known for the company that you keep. "casual" smokers or not, if you plan to go into law enforcement, i would not let them do their "thing" around me at all. its called the hint of impropriety (sp?). basically dont put yourself into a position where your integrity may one day be questioned.

Well, my dad is a felon a couple times over, and is looking at more as I type this with a great possibility of seeing prison time this time.

So I can't pick my family members... so if it affects me, then so be it there isn't anything I can do about it. But since he is my dad, it should have no affect on me since I've kept myself clean. The only thing that worries me currently is the law suit (quite title) that my dad got me named as a defendant in that I had nothing to do with to begin with... But I've already been told by a few that if they do my background they will ignore it.

As far as friends... you can pick your friends. Having friends that are felons, or up on charges for felonies can hurt ya. It will fall under the charactor or integrity. I have a friend that is up on a felony charge presently, but its again... one of those things my dad did as I have offered to tesitify to it if it goes to court... last I knew his stuff was supposed to be dismissed as he did no wrong to begin with But, if this individual did do wrong, and is "habitual" I would end the friendship... I can handle friends having a record, but I find it disrespectfull when they continue the trend and could put you in a possition that is unwanted to begin with or could prevent you from getting a job, then he's not much of a friend then is he?

    Yeah..
I guess I will let her go by the wayside then.

She still smokes, and I swear to god she sweats 80 proof alcohol.
As person, shes nice.and great company when shes sober. But trying to find a time to hang out when shes not under the influence of something is damn near impossible.
As I said, I dont want to get pulled over and have my passenger high, or with drugs on thier person.

I need as much help as I can get going into L/E and Im not going to screw up my chances by allowing the company I keep ruin my life. I dont have friends, I dont have a social life...I try to stay squeaky clean, with a clean record. And it would just be my luck that I finally find someone for whom can be a friend and they turn out to have a criminal record. That just fucking figures...LOL

Im going to stick with hubby, and my guns.

another option thumper is to just explain to your friend what your feelings are and see if she will comprimise for you. by that i mean if you are around, none of that crap should go on. unfortunetaly being in law enforcement sometimes means being unpopular. good luck.

After I went into LE, I left most of my dopper friends behind. Besides working nights and not being around to socialize, I refused to compromise my position. I see that it works that way with a lot of cops.

    Yeah, social life? Whats that?
    LOL
I like working swing even though it stresses my marriage life.
Its when everything happens, and I am unwilling to compromise my shift, at all.....ever.

I told this person, that no more drinking if we go out..none. She comes back with allright, but when 9'o'Clock comes around your buying me a beer. I said no.. So needless to say we didnt hang out at all that particular day.

We were susposed to hang out on Monday, but hubby was home and I wanted to spend time with him instead.

In anycase, I dont need any pot head friends. I have gone three years without a social life or friends, I figure I can go a few more years.

I had to drop my doper friends when I started work. They would constantly nag me about what kinds of drug busts the cops were doing, and I was so afraid they would name-drop.
It just wasn't worth it for me. I watch out for #1 and that is much more important.

    Yup I hear yah Stump.
Hubby said the day your sworn in I want you to contact the Reno Police Department and have my aunt and her brood of children arrested. I laughed, but only for a moment because...yeah they all gotta go.

His Aunt has actually given me tips on how to live of other peoples social security, how to scam the "system". I would love nothing more than to put her white trailer trash *** right where it belongs behind a set of bars.

Then her daughters are into illegal protistuiton.. Its bad... Its like a jerry springer show at the family reunion of which I am not going to this year.

    LOL

    Why wouldn't I tolerate it?

Hell, when I was young I used to smoke so much pot that the Zig-Zag man had a tattoo of ME on HIS arm. :D

    But seriously...
I really don't care if some of my friends like to smoke pot. It's their money, and I don't associate with drunks or addicts.

I know some people don't approve of that attitude, but I really don't care, and since I'm not a cop, I don't HAVE to care.

BTW, I was never a spook. I was a soldier.
I just did some interesting things back in the 80's.
