Family's reaction to you becoming a cop

Right now im in the middle of getting my associates degree, so i have a while before i can go to the academy. But untill i go, i am not telling my family that i plan on becoming a cop. Middle eastern families(for the most part) just would not understand.

Anyways, i thought id just ask, what was your family's reaction to you becoming a cop? Were they supportive? Or were you discouraged? Or is having a cop not a new thing in your family which most likely means its encouraged.

    just curious

I may be the first cop in my family...that is if I survive all of this...but for the most part....my mother has been pretty supportive...My sis gives me **** every now and then but she is just a young rebelious teenager who knows less than I do...and my father...well I really don't know what his opinion is...I know he likes my guns!

They are happy for me...that I am always striving to do something else...that I am active and that I seek my goals...they know this has been a growing passion for me...they were a little startled at first I think that is just a normal reaction for parents...they want to protect their children..but my parents...even though the police have not always been there when they needed them and were there when they didn't (LOL) they are very respectful of the job...and think that I will do well in the field...

I have only one friend who really supports me....he is a sheriff...and I know he would rather have me become a lawyer...as he thinks rather highly of me...the rest of my friends...well I don't know what they think....I dont' really care I guess...I am the one paying the bills...

My beloved has always I think been a little concerned from the get go...as he is also and LEO...He just cares that is all....he and (everyone else) lost a very good officer last year...and I just think that scares him...he wants to keep me safe too....

You have to do what makes you happy....and you only get one chance at this life...so just live it....everyones character will show a new face once you share the news and it is just a bridge you will cross when you get there...those who would usually disagree with something usually turn around when it is for a loved one.

Well my immediate family is supportive of my goal, even though they probably don't know how badly I want to reach my goal. Their support for this is probably more because my father is a cop.

When I did pass the state police exam to the point on being accepted into the academy I turned it down. All that time my family did not accept it at all. Coming from a family whose background is in computers, doctors, corporate lawyers, I don't know why but they said they do not want me to become a "foot soilder". Many arguments insued on this topic. I always got the feeling they thought more about the $$$

When it came down to it I declinded the offer and decided that it would be in my best interest to go back to college to get my masters (with the thought of maybe applying to the FBI or Secret Service). I'd rather not go into specifics.

You have to do what you want to do. If your parents don't like it tough for them because it is your life. They will get over it.

I will be the first and only cop in my family when I finally get hired. My wife has been very supportive and patient with me about it. I have been trying for a while now. I get a little further every time. My kids think it is the coolest thing ever that their old man wants to be a cop. My parents show interest but we don't talk a lot. I say if that is what you want then go for it. Who cares what they think. Listen to their thoughts and then do what is right for you. It's your life and you have to live with your choices.
And your whiney *** crybaby excuse would be....

Oh by no means am i going to allow my family's opinion on the matter affect me. I just know they aren't going to like it. I figured its something alot of police officers had to deal with though, so i thought id ask about it.

thankfully, i'm the 14th cop in my family so i didn't have to put up with anything negative. Although, i work with guys who did go outside the lines and take this job. All i can say on their behalf, is that for a long time your family members will not understand you or what your mindset will become. THis job changes alot of things and people not on the job will not understand where your coming from or why you have a cynical perception of everyone and everything around you. But, keep your head up and go for it. It's your life and you have to do what's best for you

My wife knew my desire before we got married. The only part she didn't like was being home alone while I work 11-7 shift. I got her a dog ( 7 lbs of fury known as our attack poodle) and she is happy.

My mom is always concerned but I am her baby what can I say ?

The only person that supports me in my large family is my mother. My girlfriend supports me too.

That's all the support I need.
