    LEO's Give an Example....

LEO's please give an example of the Police Academy experience. How does the day start, can you go home like a job or do you stay there for the duration like Military Bootcamp, what are the classes like, and when it is all said and done what are the requirements for a recruit to graduate and how can a future member of the academy prepare and train for the academy?

It depends on the academy. Some are more bookwork....while others are more physically demanding.

In my academy, we did PT from 0800-1000 (Retired Army SGM that happened to be a Green Beret) then we had classes all day. Some days we would do PT, then have DT the rest of the morning. Just depended on the day.

What to do to prepare...? Run, run, run.....do lots of push-ups and sit-ups.....then run some more. Work on running up hills and doing sprints....
    Then run some more......

We also did some swimming....so you might want to look into that as well....

    Just a thought

When I went through, we did not have any PT.

But that was around the time dirt was invented:eek:

Depends on the location. Some are live in where you wake up at ungodly hours and do stuff all day, then sleep there. Mine was 0800-1700 mon-Fri. A lot of PT, a lot of tests and book work.

Ours you could either live in or off site but it was far easier to live in, especially considering we paraded at stupid o'clock for inspection. The vast majority of ours was book work and about 25 exams over a full time 18 week course. The physical side of it wasn't overly intensive. You had to pass the vast majority of exams and kept yourself out of any grief to graduate and move on to the 2 year probation period.

    I commuted every day.

We started off with various kinds of PT which included running, pushups, pushing full sized cruisers around the parking lot ( engine off and in neutral) , swimming and of course plenty of classroom instruction as well as the range , emergency vehicle ops and hands on criminal investigations.

The academy here is now 5 months long.

You guys got to use neutral?? :D I am so jealous. Ours was with the vehicle in gear and brake set. j/k but some days it felt like it.

In response to the question, the beautiful, bug-filled campus on the south GA coast is a live-in style. Each agency/ program has a different set-up/ requirements as far as approach. Some are a kinder, gentler program, while others beat you down, then kick you while you are down. (I will honestly never forget those instructors, but it is with much love for what they were trying to instill) I saw one a few years ago at in-service and as soon as he walked around the corner, my first thought was "run, because this is going to hurt" Nice guy away from the basic academy setting

MrZ35, that is a fairly broad blanket question about police academies There are officers from all over the country that operate under different standards, so out of 50 different responses, you will get about 50 different answers.

    What he said :D

I've never seen FBI or DEA academy but from the Federal LEO academies I've seen USBP was by far the hardest. USMS was pretty close. That's for you Switch ;)

My academy was 0600 to around 2000 Mon-Sat. PT for only one hour in the morning. 16 weeks of hell, lots of running, lots of classes.
