Pension Question - NYPD to Nassau County

Hi! A friend of mine from Nassau County said that if you live in Nassau County you can start as a police officer in NYPD and then later apply for Nassau County when the positions open. He said that the years you put towards your pension in NYPD carry over to the Nassau County Police Department. Is this true? Or do you have to start the 20 years all over again if you switch to Nassau County?

It is true. However, I am not sure how exactly it works with Nassau. Some agencies make you do 20 years and then add the years you did with NYPD to calculate your pension. Other's count the time up front. For example if you did 2 years with NYPD, you would only have to do 18 to get a 20 year pension.

I am under the impression it counts at the end. So if you have 3 years NYPD, you start with Nassau at the regular rookie pay, but only have to do 17 years with them.

Your pay scale does start at the bottom like Joey said, and he's somewhat right. You need to do 10 years with the new department to get the time added to the front end. (10 years + 3 years up front) then you would need to do 7 more years for your 20 year pension. Other jobs (such as corrections) would come on the back end meaning you would need to do 20 years, then whatever time you did with with other agency would come on the back end. I'm not 100% sure about the 10 year mark for all agency's. I know that's the # for Suffolk County though.

in nassau you have to your 20 years no matter what but if you did 10 years in the NYPD your pension after 20 years served would be the equivelent of a 30 year pension it gets added on the end. Only exception is the military buy back.

Suffolk is the same thing must do your 20 and your time counts on the end. Funny thing is suffolk wants none of your NYPD pension they tell you to keep it. When i head over there im gonna roll my pension into an IRA to avoid those damn taxes
