Does your department respond to all emergencys, like fire and medical?
and how many times do you respond to a call or emergency off duty?

In my department we respond to all fire and medical calls.Originally Posted by bigmanlittleman

Cogito ergo summopere periculosus.
Fiat justitia, ruat coelum.
I worked for a police dept., not fire. I responded only if the firefighters found a reason for me to be there.

+1 The novelty of responding to any and every call (medicals... etc.) wore off rather quickly when I got out of training.Originally Posted by retdetsgt

This nebula is located in the constellation Musca, the fly, visible only in the southern hemisphere.
Never. Unless I'm called in, which is rare... once a month, or so.Originally Posted by bigmanlittleman
Where i'm a police officer I often get dispatched to medicals, more so because most of the area I cover is beach and being trained in BLS, i'm usually the first one available to provide treatment until EMS takes over. Fires i'll go to when they need traffic control, but their is no need for a cop at a fire.

I work in a small country town in South Australia. Our fire service is part time so we are always first on scene to evaluate or rescue people (not often).
We attend a lot of mental health issues to assist ambos with an unruly patient.
I am also on my local volunteer fire brigade so I have been to a few fires.
Our station is not 24 hours and after hours we are on call out. we get about one call out a month depending on our roster. Pain in the butt. They never ring when you are sitting at home, just got there, and still in uniform. It is always about ten minutes after you have got into a nice warm bed and gone to sleep. Oh well, pays good. (we get paid for the recall jobs).
I would only ever recall myself to duty on the rarest of occasions. Once recently was whe I observed a road rage incident and both parties went to the Cop Station and I was right behind them. We all pulled up in the street and I saw the two drivers enter the station and heard yelling. I went in, showed the aggressor my badge and advised him that he learn to drive and shut his mouth. I then rang his work place (it was a work vehicle) and got him in trouble there. The only reason I got invovled was that I saw what had happened and new that the cop in the station had no idea who was right and who was wrong.
The only other time I would get involved in something off duty is something where I knew I could win. We don't carry weapons off duty and I don't won't my wife to get my death benefits.

#1 - NO, that's what the Fire Department is for. We do respond with FD if it is Police related, such as an MVA with injuries, Shooting, Stabbing, Gang Fight, etc (They stage blocks away until we advise them the "scene is safe" for them).Originally Posted by bigmanlittleman
#2 - Only if you are in a Specialized Unit or an emergency department wide callout where you need an extra 200 officers, such as a man-made or natural disaster.
We (NYPD) respond to all fire/explosion calls, we are sometimes there before FD too. Not to knock FD, but they do 24 hour tours in NY, and do have to sleep, and also respond from the fire house, and have to get dressed into their gear.
If we're there first, and it's a confirmed fire, we'll get people out of the building, and notify central that it's confirmed. After FD is there, we'll block the street as needed.
Same thing with EMS runs. PD, FD, EMS all get dispatched to cardiacs/unconscious. And PD & EMS get dispatched to most other types of aided cases (heavy bleeder, etc).
And I don't respond to emergencys off duty unless there's a danger to someone's well being, and I happen to be right there.

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
It is the deputies choice to respond to fire and ems calls.
Since everyone is spread so thin, we usually go in case
extra help is need.
We do respond if there is a request by the on site person in charge.
I know, I'm being an Ars, but it's Emergencies...![]()

Not if the emergency has possession of something. Then it would be correct as emergency's.Originally Posted by acreature

As far as off duty calls, unless I was specifically on call for something, the pager got turned off when I left the building and pre caller ID, the answering machine or my wife screened the calls. Invaribly when I got called in on some emergency, all I did was end up standing around while the brass tried to figure out what to do. Too many times I missed an important event in my real life because of some silly panicked decision some captain made.
