private contracted police dept's?

While going through the processes that i am currently going through, a friend of mine asked me if i have considered applying to a contracted dept.
I told him that i have never heard of one. So i figured that i would satisfy my own curiosity and ask if there is such a thing, and if there is, where do they get their authority from, and how are they to work for?
Any info would be appreciated

Can't think of anything off of the top of my head. There are private quasi-government contracts doing armed guard work at some bases in GA. If you were to find an example, I may be able to help explain it or at least point you in the right direction.

Sorry about that, I should have explained further.
he said that there are private dept's being contracted out by police dept's and businesses to do patrol work and other duties (warrants, ect) and that the officers doing those contracts are mandated. Like i said, i have never heard of one and i have a feeling he is just mis-informed. But then again, thats why i'm asking here just to be safe. :D

Not sure about GA. But I know that Louisana was doing some stuff like that....or at least trying to.....

I seem to remember reading somewhere that North Carolina also allows some sort of private policing agencies. I don't know much about them, as such things are unheard of in Florida. About the only thing that's privatized down here are some correctional facilities, and there's enough opposition of that to go around.

MTAPD in the NYC Metro area is "technically" not civil service, and a private PD, as the employer is a private company, and not a municipality.

I looked on google but nothing came up for georgia. So hopefully, someone will come along in this thread and lead me into the right direction on who to maybe talk to from this great state of georgia :D
