    i'm in trouble

hi officers how are you guys doing? well here i am, got another question to ask.. well here is the story

on march 17th, i purchased the motorcycle for 3500 dollars through online. i called him and i met him around my house and we traded money and the motorcycle. but the owner did not have his title. so i told him, i would give him 1000 dollars and give me the title tomorrow. he saids yea sure no problem. so i wait and wait and he calls, he saids he needs the money right now and that he will leave his SUV at my house til he gets the title so i was okay with that b/c jeep worth more than 3500 in my guess. after week, i called him and now he is not picking up his phone nor contact with me. what can i do? i have the VIN# for his jeep and the car key and the alarm and all his tool. i am not guessing its stolen vehicle b/c of the key and the alarm. but the license plate is registered in PA not in NY.. its weird b/c i remember dropping him off at the staten island. i called local police department and they said come and run the VIN # together.. if they do run all the license and VIN#, are they authurize to give me their information? and what are the best solution for my situation right now?

The NYPD will not give you any of the true owner or registration info obtained through the computer system. You may be able to pay a fee to either Pa or NY DMV for info on the registration or vin.

Get a private detective who can run all the info for you so you can get a civil case going. You did get a receipt for the money you gave him right?

    A lesson in LIFE !!

Read my sig line about learning from " other peoples mistakes"

You " bought" a motorcycle and have NO title.

    You gave away $1,000.00.

You have NO idea who the actual owner is.

You can't reach the " seller".

You have the "seller's " car as collateral but you have NO idea who owns it , whether it is stolen or not and you can't take the vehice in any manner.

EVERYTHING you did so far with regard to this "purchase" is the exact WRONG way to buy a vehicle.

NEVER ever buy a vehicle from a private party unless YOU get the title at the time of sale.

NEVER accept a persons vehicle as "collateral" for some sort of payment or guarantee.

Follow whatever your state / province /kingdom requires in order to purchase a vehicle to the " T ". Otherwise , you are begging for a problem.

Oh my God! Common sense would have been an asset here.... There was nothing to learn! It should have never happened.

Here is all the information you need.

    Asked and answered .....

So far it sounds like you don't have much of a criminal case against the guy. I would not be surprised to find out that the SUV isn't his - perhaps not stolen, but not his to leave and the real owner will come get it - and you can't do a thing about it. If you go to start taking stuff out of the jeep to sell - then you are stealing. I'm sure you've heard the old adge that "two wrongs don't make a right"

Follow Valor55's advice - it is the best you can do.

You would be in line for some citations for the improper sale or attempted sale ( so would the seller) in my state.

You have NO legal hold on his truck. If he comes and takes it , there is nothing you can do.

You are now in a civil quagmire in which I as a police officer couldn't help you.

Sounds like you might need a lawyer.

Your question has been answered. Your bill of sale is useless and the whole way you handled this is stupid. We aren't going to argue with you. Get a lawyer, this is a civil case.
