    Seniority

With it being the holiday season and all I was wondering how it is determined who has to work the holiday shifts that nobody wants? (I.e. christmas eve, morning) Is it luck of the draw or is the the rookies that have work them?

Here we sign up for either Christmas Eve, Christmas, NY eve or New Years off. You put down your 1st, 2nd, etc. choice. Everybody can get one of them off, however seniority governs who gets the first pick.

We do something similar, but no one is guarenteed any off. Based on your start date with the department you'll have more of a chance of getting off your first request then those of less seniority.

It's good for nothing except providing a false sense of hope of spending the holidays with family. All the command staff will get their requests approved, while 97% of the officers get boned.

We have set schedules. If you work Mon-Thurs and a holiday falls on one of those days, you work it. We allow 2 people off per shift based on a first-come-first-serve system. So if you are able to take the holiday off, then you can. We get paid extra (10-hrs) for the holiday whether you're scheduled to work it or not. If you take it off, you can burn that 10-hrs instead of a vacation day.

Command staff aren't necessary on a holiday. Most of our command staff would love to work one of them to get the comp time. In detectives, there's a sign up list to see who gets to work the holiday. We take detectives down to minimum staffing. Uniform is the only place where there are some people who want it off and don't get it. Again, a lot of guys want to work them for the comp time.

Set schedules, if it falls on a day off, you have it off regardless of seniority. Three people are allowed to be on vacation on any given day first come first serve.

We rotate the 4 major summer/fall holidays: Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. We get one off per year, essentially creating a 4 year cycle. This is because my agency has a 75% manpower requirement on these weekends since they are designated as CARE holidays (high fatality days due to increased traffic).

Then we have to work either Christmas or New Year's, and switch holidays the following year. Luckily I get Christmas off this year because I actually don't mind working New Year's.

Blah, who needs off? It's double time, and I can go home so long as there arent any calls ;)

But yes, it's first come, first serve - and Rank then Seniority wins all ties.

We have set schedules as well. I had to work every holiday this year. And this will include Christmas this year and New Years eve/day.

I don't really mind with it being double time. It's usually quiet and I get to ruin some peoples holidays...hey if I gotta work it then somebody's gonna pay!!!! :D ;) j/k

You can say that again. Any clue why I am the only one working both New Years and Christmas at this ****hole??? You, Stewie and I gotta find a new department...and fast. I still can't understand what you know who is saying half the time.
