During my oral board I was asked:
At 11:00 PM, you respond to a call from a lady who is complaining about loud noise caused by people who are playing basketball at the basketball court outside her apartment. When you arrive at the scene you see five teenagers playing basketball. After you inform the group that a neighbor has complained about the noise, they start to become confrontational.
What do you do?
My response was, "I contact dispatch, inform them of the situation, and request backup". "I then calmy explain to the group that it is late at night and that most people need to work in the morning and that they should find something to do that will not disturb the neighbors".
After the oral board I thought about that question and feel I did not give the best answer.
Should I have asked the interviewer to be more specific on how the group was being "confrontational" with me? So that I may have been able to give a better response?
Should I have stated that I attempt to maintain a calm conversation with the group, in order to try avoiding any of them from becoming violent, as I wait for backup to arrive.
Should I have said that while talking to the group I also observe the scene for any open liquor containers around or anything that might look like a concealed weapon on any of them?
Since they were teenagers, are they breaking any curfew laws?
Should I have said, "Lets play a game of three vesus three while backup is en route"? :D
Please let me know what would have been a better way to answer this question.
This is why oral boards are not done over the internet!
