    ??? for Broward County officers

I am getting close to making a decision to move full speed ahead with the hiring process with a department(possibly Sunrise since that's where I live) and I want to know if swimming tests are given in the academy? I know it is a requirement before you can turn in an application in this county, but acutally that is my biggest hurdle. Growm man like myself can't swim and I have a pool out back.

If you know what are the requirements for the swim test at BCC what is it? Above water, laps, timed????????? Can I fake it? What do you think?

Dade County doesn't have a swim test at all from my understanding, but I can do without that county.

Thanks in advance and if there is anything you want to add, feel free. I need every bit of info. I am a type of person who like to know certain things before doing anything. It helps.

Straight off the Broward County S.O. website (http://www.sheriff.org/apps/bsorecruit/faqs.pdf) :

"Participants must swim 50 yards fully clothed (long pants and a t-shirt). You may use any stroke except the backstroke."
Astronomical avatar of the week: The Hourglass Nebula: This formation of gasses was created when a dying star gently ejected its outer layers forming a glowing region of ionized gas as seen in the photo. The remaining core is known as a white dwarf, seen in the center. Our sun will leave a similar corpse behind after expending its nuclear fuel. This nebula is located in the constellation Musca, the fly, visible only in the southern hemisphere.

The "swim test" at BCC was swim a lap of their pool (olympic sized), any stroke no time limit. I doubt you could "fake" it, the pool is bigger than you think when you are swimming it.

Then tread water for a period of time (5 or 10 minutes). (The whole test is probably in their website somewhere.)

There was no swimming in my academy. But, you do have to complete the swim test at least once to be able to turn in an application in Broward County.

Individual departments may have their own requirements of applicants too.

And there is nothing wrong with Dade County, there are plenty of good departments down here.
This isn't Burger King, you are not going to get it your way.
