    What is a cop?

    Hello everyone.

    This is my very first post in this forum. I have a question. What is a Probation Officer? Are they the same as Police Officers?

    No. Probation is an alternative sentencing program. Instead of incarcerating someone in jail/prison, they are put on probation. To make sure that they abide by the term set forth by the judge, a probation officer is assigned to the convict to ensure they do what they are supposed to do. Probation officers are a part of the criminal justice system, work with law enforcement officials, and carry out investigative duties related to their probationary duties, but technically are not law enforcement officers, but in many areas they are "peace officers" (i.e. POST certified, carry firearms and go through same state certification as LEOs).

    I recently had a DUI, and was busted for meth, Can I still be a probation officer if I join the Military to prove I am a good guy?
