So if someone pulls a knife or gun on you, you're going to whip out a baton and try to go to town on them? Riiiiiight....that's smart.

If I were you, I wouldn't carry one even if they are legal. Most states consider using a baton deadly force if it's by a non-LEO, plus there just aren't many situations where they are appropriate. Getting robbed is certainly not one of them.

Pepper spray would work better.
