Im 16 year old girl and I have wanted to be a police officer for quite some time now. I live in a smaller town about an hour away from Chicago, which is were I would like to be a officer. So I was just wondering if anyone can help me by telling me how to prepare for a career in law enforcment. Possible college courses and things of that nature. I was also wondering how long it usually takes for a police officer to be promoted to detective. Just thought someone here might be able to answer my questions. Thank you.

There will be some LEO's on here closer to Chicago that can answer a little better. Going to college will definitely help, and the major doesn't have to be specifically criminal justice. It might help to check with the dept you are interested in working for to see what they look for in a candidate.

Detective is usually not a promotion, but special assignment. Most depts require that the officer have several years of street experience before putting in for an investigative position.
