Question I'm applying to three police agencies...

I'm applying to SFPD, CHP, and BART Police for the bay area. I was wondering if this is a smart thing to do...

Scholastic wise, I got my HS Diploma, and an AA in Liberal Arts. I currently went back to get a degree in Computer Forensics, but find the Administrative Justice courses to be waaaay more interesting/fulfilling than the computer classes. This re-inforced my motivation in becoming a Police Officer, something that always has been on my mind since I was a kid, so now I'm going for it. Office work isn't for me. It's not fulfilling at all. Pushing paper isn't the kind of career I imagine myself doing.

Also, is it bad to be around Marijuana in my pre-stages to becoming a police officer? Of course I know I shouldn't be, but will this hurt my chances in any way? I'm smoking it of course, but a lot of people I know do, and it's hard to not be around it. I honestly can say I'm around it probably 2-3 times a month.

    Sorry for the long post...

It's very easy not to be around. I was in the same place you were, all it takes is not hanging out with them. If you continue to, I can guarantee your chances will be detrimentally affected. It shows a lack of willingness to accomadate your life to get into the profession you want to get into.

These type of friends will never support you going into this field, anyways, so find a group of people that are mature and preferably law abiding.
Astronomical avatar of the week: The Hourglass Nebula: This formation of gasses was created when a dying star gently ejected its outer layers forming a glowing region of ionized gas as seen in the photo. The remaining core is known as a white dwarf, seen in the center. Our sun will leave a similar corpse behind after expending its nuclear fuel. This nebula is located in the constellation Musca, the fly, visible only in the southern hemisphere.

I agree with you there. They aren't fond of the idea of me and the path I'm taking in wanting to become a police officer. I'm doing good so far, today was the first time I was around it in the past month. It was actually my brother. That's his drug problem, and is why I'm kind of distant from him.

How can you be interested in becoming a police officer if you are hanging with people who smoke pot? Obviously, you are not serious about being a police officer if you have to ask if this would hurt your chances. Use your head, of course it is going to hurt your chances.

I gave up a few friends due to their MJ use. My career is more important than them getting stoned. If you don't have that mentality then you aren't ready to work in law enforcement.

Not to mention your BI WILL talk to friends who will talk to friends who will talk to more friends. Who you spend your time with shows a great deal about the type of person you are.

Please stay in Cali. You would be auto DQ'd in most other places for your drug use and otherwise would have a tough time due to the kind of people you hang with.

I'm already in that process of dropping the people who are around MJ a lot. It's not like everytime I see them, drugs are around. Most of the time it spontaneously comes up, then I get away from it.

I'm already aware of how this would effect my chances as well, and it bothers me. This is something I really want to persue, and now I'm paying for it.

You need to be aroud people who do not even spontaneously use drugs. You certainly have a choice to make , the drugs and your druggy friends or a CAREER in police work. If and when you get hired , are you prepared to arrest some of your " friends?".

I'm already prepared for that. They know of my career path, and some have strayed away from me, but I'm willing to take a blow in the friends department. I'm trying to get my life and career rolling already, I'm tired of doing what I'm doing now and ready for the next step in life.

I've already told my brother what I'm doing, and I'll have to do what I have to do if I do become a PO.
