    Question about self control?

I just got done watching the Primetime show about the McDonalds Strip Search Hoax, and I was wondering how a police officer keeps their cool when going into a situation such as that? As a college student it almost made me sick to watch that girl be taken advantage of in that way. As a person I do not know how I would keep from taking the older man that was in the room with her outside and just beating him for what he did to her. I just wondered how you would keep your emotions under control in any situation like that?

We have a job to do... it's as simple as that. If you get caught up in your emotions you can't do the job you're sworn to do.

You come to realize that if you keep your cool and don't blow the case, then far, far worse things will happen to this guy in jail than you could ever do to him now.

Did you have to go through any special training to help not lose your cool?

If you need anger management therapy, you don't need to be in this job.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

You develop a teflon heart to deal with the more emotionally damaging situations. If you use alcohol to deal with it, it will eventually destroy you too. I try to hit the department weight room after every shift to "retract my fangs".

It is a tough job that really takes its toll on people.

After YEARS of getting dumped on by the public, you better have learned how to handle it and that doesn't mean drowning it in a bottle.

You learn that you can only do so much.

    That you CAN'T save world.

That you are a police officer, not a magician.

That you DON'T take the job home with you.

That you accept that you are but a simple person tasked with sometimes incredible and horrible problems.

You have to take the job seriously, but you can't take it personally.

You have to remember the pissed off citizen is pissed at the uniform, not you.

A good sense of humor helps too! Being able to banter back and forth with people, citizens and bad guys alike helped me a lot. Not only to defuse situations, but keep me from leaving angry too.
