    Another Silly Hypothetical

    Preface:
A couple weekends ago, my wife and I went to a Halloween party down in Texas. Her old High School friend was having a few friends over and we were invited. There were six couples altogether, two of us, two that we knew and two that we didn’t know. Everyone was drinking except me; I knew we had to drive back that night and I have this weird thing against drinking and driving.
About half way through the evening one of the guys said that his cousin wanted to come over but didn’t have a ride. They were going to go pick him up, but had been drinking so I suggested that I drive. Bear in mind that I’m new to the area, I don’t know this guy, I don’t speak Spanish and he doesn’t speak English.
We got back to the party house without incident but once we arrived, he pulled out something that smelled a lot like marijuana and started smoking it. It then dawned on me that he must’ve had that on him in my truck! I’m typically very cautious about who I let in my vehicle and whose vehicle I get in, but I let my guard down that time.

Question 1: How much trouble would I have been in if we had gotten searched? (I know it isn’t very likely that we would’ve been searched as we only drove a few blocks and I didn’t break any traffic laws.) And what would that have done to my future Law Enforcement career?

Question 2: How can that situation be avoided? Should I have asked/searched him before letting him in my vehicle?
    Thanks.
Contrary to popular belief, somtimes violence can solve some things.

If you happened to be stopped and the *** clown threw the weed in your vehicle and didn't fess up to it, then everyone could have been hit with a possession charge. Could have seriously put a damper on the LE career, or at minimum some time when you could have even thought about applying.

Doesn't sound like an avoidable situation since you couldn't have known this guy had anything illegal on him.

Sure it was avoidable: don't give rides to/from parties to complete strangers, especially when they can't speak a language that you can understand! ;)

    I agree with RO56.

You could have been in a jackpot and any future in LE thrown out the window (for at least 5 years anyway).

Lets say you were cleared of any charges you're only as good as the company you keep. In everyone elses eyes, the company you keep smoke pot and rely on you as a taxi service. Not good.

You have to be real careful about what you do at this point if you are trying to get into LE. Don't screw it up by hanging around the wrong people and/or making poor choices.

I always tend to shoot in hypothetical scenarios. Preferably multiple times. After all, this IS Texas. :D
Don't try and outweird me, I find weirder things than you in my breakfast burrito.

You are known for who you hang out with or who YOU are. Sounds like you are OK, sounds like who you hang with ISN'T.

Sounds like you need to re-evaluate your friends as they KNEW he had the weed.

THat is assuming that you don't want to get arrested.

Sure it does....don't give people you don't know and trust rides from now on, and don't go to Halloween parties in Texas... :D
