    Glasses or Contacts

I'm in the final stages of the hiring process and my medical exam is friday. Right now I wear glasses and I'm wondering if I will be required to go to the optometrist and get contacts? I haven't seen any other officers at the department wearing glasses. I can see why it would be better to have contacts, someone couldn't just reach out and take your eyesight away.

Do any of your departments require contacts over glasses?

I have never heard of a dept. REQUIRING contacts...I wore both at one time or another, and never had a problem with either

It depends on the department, and also depends on how bad your vision is. Some agencies will make the officer wear contacts if their uncorrected vision is really bad. The thought behind this is that if your glasses end up getting knocked off or broken during a fight, you still need to be able to see clearly enough to shoot and use other weapons.

My department doesn't require anyone to wear contacts. In fact, you can buy in to the eye insurance plan to have your eyes examined every year and offset the cost of new glasses.

Whether it's required or not, I'd highly recommend it. Glasses will fog up quickly when you go from a very cold outside to a warm inside. You might wanna be able to see well long about that time.

You don't need contacts or glasses if you have LASIK surgery.

Down here it's going from the air conditioned car to the humidity outside. I also found that rain tended to bother me when I wore glasses (water drops on the lenses), and I was always cleaning them (broke a few during scuffles too). I wear contacts now and am looking in LASIK.

I found that more people resisted arrest when I wore glasses. Anyone else have that same trend?

OK now that I'm hired I definately want to get Lasik. What does the price run for intra-lasik (the thought of a scalpel cutting my eye just freaks me out)?

Feel free to PM me. Also did your department insurance cover it? If it does I'll wait a while before I get it done, I don't want to be the guy who uses his insurance for surgery the day after I get it.

Glasses are a lot easier, more conveinent, but don't get caught with them fogged up, or in a downpoor. Do yourself a favor .... if you can wear contacts, make that investment, it will pay off in the long run.
