Hello, I want to become a police officer, but I was just wondering if I may encounter some problems during my application.
I have a 100% clean record, but my older brother has 6 different convictions for theft and drug use from when he was 17-20. He is 25 now and hasn't gotten into any trouble since then. It that going reflect badly on me or do you think that that would be a problem?

In my opinion it shouldnt be a problem

They always say. You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family! If your record is clean then I can't see them holding what your brother has done over your head. And don't go bringing it up either.

I have two friends that I grew up with that are both Federal LEOs. One works for NCIS and the other works for the FBI (after a 3 year stint with the DEA). Dad got busted and sent to Federal Prison for a year for bilking HUD on housing projects. Both of them were in the Army and later going to college when it happened. They had nothing at all do to with it. They were up front with the recruiters and neither one of them had a problem getting on with the Feds.....

They are looking at your integrity not your families integrity when they hire you. I am sure something will come up on the office about your brothers record, but all you really need to do is tell them the truth. If you had nothing to do with what he was doing then thats what you tell them. They are going to hire you not your family. Its all about you not them.
