    Ticket Question

Okay, one of my friends got a ticket over the summer in Illinois for 70 in a 35. It's her first ticket, she was 17 at the time, now she's 18. Well now she got a letter in the mail the other day saying that if she has another offense, her license will be suspended. Is this right, being only her first offense? Any help is appreciated, thanks for your time!

I'd give Oscar the Grouch ten bucks if he'd call Elmo "Numbnuts" and then hit him with a shovel.

If that was here she would've been banned/suspended on that one occasion because of the amount of speed she was over the limit. 70 in a 35 is just stupid, I'd imagine she's lucky to have walked away with a ticket rather than taking a trip in the back of a patrol car.

Best she doesn't go speeding anymore

Going that fast she's lucky she didn't get tossed in jail and made to post bond. I would have tossed her in jail........no question about it.

I am sure they are on the point system there and she used up all that she had at her age.......

Why does anyone need to go that fast??

I'm unsure of Illinosis law, however 70 in a 35 is quite excessive. This letter may be a direct result of the excessive speed. There are states that she could've been arrested on the spot for doubling the speed limit.

Did the letter list a length of time she would have to go without another ticket? In CT if a driver gets a certain amount of citations within a short period of time, they must attend a traffic school refresher class after every single violation until they can stay out of trouble for 3 years. Failure to do so results in indefinate license suspension.

In Oregon, she would have lost her license if she were 17 and did something like that. They hammer juveniles pretty hard for being that stupid and they should.

In NY, 25+ over the limit is a speed misdemeanor...definitely would lose her license

Your friend is not only lucky she didn’t get her license suspended immediately, she’s also lucky nobody pulled out in front of her or stopped in front of her.

At 35 MPH the average person will be able to stop in an emergency in about 136.5 feet. That includes the 1.6 seconds it takes someone to say “oh, ****” and decide to hit the brakes.

At 70 MPH it doesn’t just take twice the distance to stop, it takes about 2.8 times the distance to stop, or about 382 feet.

If this was at night, your friend was overdriving her headlights to a dangerous degree. Even if it was during the daylight hours, the average adult driver doesn’t look 382 feet in front of them. The average 17-year-old driver isn’t looking a hundred feet in front of them. If anything had happened in front of her in the lane she would have wrecked and been seriously hurt or killed.

Illinois has a graduated license law. This means if you are under the age of 18, the laws are more strict and I am suprised her dl did not get suspended anyway.

No, the state sends out letters all of the time with wrong and made up information.
