The term "punch her back" does not imply self defense to me.

Nobody said the girl would get off or not be arrested based on her gender. Chances are both parties would be arrested and it'd be down to the judge to decide whether your use of force is reasonable as self defense.

If you ever went near the words "retaliation" or "punch her back" that self defence argument would disappear

Cops shouldn't base there rationing just because they feel that its wrong for a guy hitting a girl back in self defense.

There is plenty of things you could do to avoid having to hit the girl. I have been in multiple "fights" with females that I was trying to arrest, and not once have I ever had to hit them.

In your "hypothetical" situation, you could have simply walked away. If she continued to follow you and hit you, (which I doubt because she would probably feel as though she won the fight), you could just put her into a bear hug to prevent further strikes, until you can get someone to help you out.

Walking away is you best option. Sure, the girl is going to tell her friends that she just beat the **** out of you, but who cares, you stay out of jail.

Oh, and I don't feel that it is wrong to hit a female, I know it is.

LMFAO - your question has been answered numerous times.

In brief;

1 - Avoid getting into a fight with a girl at all costs even if it means your pride is a little hurt

2 - Even if she does hit you it does not give you a blanket right to hit her back

3 - There is a difference between retaliation and self defence

The law makes no reference to gender in self-defense. Your use of self defense must be reasonable, immediately necessary to protect yourself. Retaliation is not a defense, and you risk being charged with fighting in public or public intoxication.
Understand though, in my state use of force is a defense to prosecution, which means you CAN be charged with assault, and in court you have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that your use of force met the legal requirements of self-defense.
Always better to walk away.

Not sure where you are at but if you were in Missouri, I would arrest both of you and charge you with either mutual affray or disorderly conduct and be done with it......

There is not a Yes or No answer here since you state there were witnesses who saw the while scene play out. Their evidence will play a major factor in the outcome.
What you see as defence may well appear different to a bystander.
The gender of the other person should make no difference, I'd rather break up blokes fighting than girls fighting anyday
