In a passenger vehicle, 35% light transmission behind the front windows. 50% light transmission on the 2 front/side windows. This is in Virginia.

In NY, 70% of the light must pass through the glass when tested. That means you can place a tint that blocks no more than 30% of the light. It applies to rear window and all side windows. Front window cannot be tinted beyond 6" from the top down.

Keep in mind that normal glass that comes with cars, though it does not look tinted and looks clear is actually tinted!!! Our department issued tint meteres on a "normal" looking side glass window usually hits about 82-85% light transmittance. That means it is tinted to block 15-18% already with no after-market tint purchased!!!!!

It used to be a equipment violation which meant if you took it off within 24 hours and a cop or mechanic verified it in writing to the court, the summons was dismissed. But the DMV recently had the law changed. It is now considered the same as a moving violation and must be pled guilty or have a court date where we testify.
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.

There is also a state mandated 7% margin of error. Therefore, in order to be able to write a ticket to a vehicle for having less than 50% tint, it actually has to read 43% or lower on our tint meters.

In addition, the legal limit on rear side windows is 35% but with the 7% margin of error has to read less than 28%

Yep. I have yet to write a tint ticket. We have tint meters but they gather dust. I'll have to use the meters someday.

The defense attorneys in my area have had a field day with suppression hearings if the tint meter has not been re-calibrated after its first year.

My meter is now in a foot locker in my closet.

Depsnds on the type of vehicle , the year it was made and which window in particular you are asking about.

FMVSS 205 is the national standard to which new vehicle manufacturers are held. Individual states can allow darker percentages with aftermarket tint.
