    becoming a cop

    (sent in)

What exactly is the procedure to becoming a cop? I understand that the academy is involved (of course!) and then there's a probational period. What is involved at the academy and when do you move up to a probational officer? How long is the probational period and when/how to you become a full-fledged officer? You can probably tell I'm a little confused. I'd appreciate it if you could help me out!

    Becoming a Cop

Becoming a Cop is diffrent in all States I would dare to guess. Here in Illinois I was hired and assigned to PTI (Police Training Institute). I completed the 10 week 400 hour course. This consisted of a lot of practical training (Hands On) as well as class room.

Then arriving at my Department for duty wsa another story. The first thing stated by my FTO (Field Training Officer) was to forget everything they taught me in PTI. (LOL)

I was on a 15 month Probation. which covered PTI and 12 months on the street.

Im sure other Departments and States vary but this is a little info for you.

It truly depends on the state you live in so I would suggest looking at this link and clicking the state you live in. http://www.iadlest.org/posts.htm If you click on your state it will send you to the states respective licensing committee. It SHOULD have a link that states what you need in order to be a sworn police officer. It may be very different. For example, in order to be a police officer in Minnesota you need a special 2 year degree with Skills. However, in Wisconsin you need 60 college credits and pass an academy. You can also get a degree in law enfrocement from a technical school. Therefore, each state is different. You don't ALWAYS have to go to an academy, sometimes getting a degree may be enough in certain states.

Each department sets their own requirements in regards to probation. Hope that helps you a little!

Come to apply with a good background

Pass our tests with a score high enough to get hired

    Attend our 5 month academy

Do a yr probation which includes 3 months riding with a training officer

At the 90 day mark, you are out on your own. ( assuming you have progressed through your training.)

-Three years college in Police studies
    -13 weeks police academy
-On the job (usually 6 months probation).... Integration is made differently in each police forces. Some goes alone after a few week only... others assigns a senior officer for a longer period.

Chief Wiggum.... pretty good life resume!!! Fits my profile... with less weight to lose at retirement!!!!:D
