    Does a cop

Does a cop have to tell you why they pulled you over? I got pulled over about a month ago, still don't know why.... Only got me for not changing the address on my license...

It's not a legal requirement. But I always tell someone why they have been stopped after I introduce myself to them.

I say Hello, I'm Deputy with Isabella Co Sheriff's Office, the reason I stopped you_____Then I ask for license, registration and proof of insurance.

Usually most officers will tell you why you were stopped, if it happens in the future just ask them.

    Arrow generally speaking...

It would be the best policy, therefore people would understand why we do the things we do, even if he tells you he is pulling you over for a seatbelt check when its really because he thinks you are cute!! Oh I'm sorry, that doesn't really happen.

Anyway, the NYPD wants thier officers to inform the public why they stop people, whether its for traffic violations or for questioning ect.

The force I worked for, they had a policy of always telling people why they pulled them over. A conversation went something like this:
"Hi, I'm Constable Blank of the Blank Police. I noticed/saw/thought you were (insert offence). Can I see your licence and registration?"
"Oh, but officer, I thought the speed limit was 80!"
    "No, it's 50"
"Oh. I thought it was 60!"
    "Let me see your licence."
    2 Minutes later:
    "Here's your ticket. Slow down."

And of course, the police would never pull you ever just to see if you'd been drinking...

Oh no, they'd never do something like that.

Actually, back a few years ago when the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series, my parents were driving along listening to the game on the car radio when Joe Carter hit that game winning home run. Well, a police car was behind them and as they were celebrating, they were swerving a bit. The officer pulled them over, since they were all over the road. He got to their window and said "Listening to the game, eh?" When my dad said yes, the officer told him to try to drive more safely, and then went back to his car.
