    ASP/Collapsible Baton Question

I am a Police Reserve, and I am going to be getting trained in the ASP collapsible baton on June 4th. I need to purchase my own baton (department doesnt supply for reserves :( small town, you know.) I was just wondering if I should get the 21" or the 26"

which size do you carry and why? which would be best for me?

    thanks in advance.
    Nate

Either one would probably work fine if your department doesn't specify. I carry the 26", it's not much bigger collapsed than the 21".

I've carried both. Currently I carry the 26' air weight. At first I thought that I'd like the extra length but I've found that I can't swing the 26' as quick as the 21'. Don't buy the air weight, they bend when you hit someone/something with them. I've warped two of them.

I'm getting ready to switch back to the 21'. I just feel like I can strike harder and faster with it.

Stateboy has a very valid point! You need to buy one that you can swing comfortably. There's a guy associated with Calibre Press that sells batons and holders. He's very knowledgeable!

I also like the AutoLock feature and the swivel holder, but you can decide that one for yourself.

I've seen some people go out and get one of the longest ones that they could thinking that it's cool and that longer is better. In the end they found out that they could swing the darn thing. So, remember bigger/longer is not always better.

Nate as the "jack of all trades for my agency the decision was left to me on the length of the ASP for 106 deputies. I bought the 26" and I have not received one single complaint in the two years they've had them.

I carry the 26" only because I don't want to get as close to the subject. Everyone is different though. I am a 5'3", 100-something pound girl and can swing the 26" like the best of them and its not much bigger collapsed than the 21". Its just a matter of preference. When you go to buy one, look at both and decide from there, I'd say.

Well I have a 21" monodock (msp) and I don't wear it. So I won't post my personal opinion.

I lied, I do not maintain a safe distance when speaking/interviewing people. I risk fighting, kind of bring it on myself ;) , because I get so close. Getting close to people doesn't allow me to "whip it out", I instead prefer to go hands on. I've found that when I've attempted to use my "asp" I had to disgard it when cuffing. But this is my opinion, and I have quite a bit of martial arts training. Hense, my preference to go hands on.

    And by the way, Congrats!

21" as we have no choice but if I did it would be the 26" ASP

Do you get to keep your straight baton, or do you have to get rid of it?
