Carrying a Weapon in a Vehicle

In the state of Kentucky, you can carry a weapon in the dash box without it being considered concealed. I carry a gun with me when I'm traveling. I know that if I get pulled over, I need to tell the officer there is a gun in the vehicle, but what actions will he take? Will he pull me out of the vehicle and search me? Or just have me step out? Will it make me look like a trouble maker for carrying a gun in my truck?

Not sure about KY, but TN, if you carry loaded in the glove compartment, it is reachable and you could be charged with carrying a concealed weapon if you are not a CCW holder.

I'm assuming by dash box, you mean in the glove compartment.

Either way, the officer may pull you out of the vehicle, or he may ask you not to reach or open the glove box. As an officer safety issue, he can do either. I don't think it necessarily makes you look like a troublemaker, but in TN it is chargeable if you don't have a permit.

Every officer may respond differently as state laws vary and each jurisdiction could enact their own local laws.

Some things matter like where you are, who you are, why you were stopped and so on.

Same in PA, ANY concealed weapon within reach of the driver would require a CCW. This includes throwing a blanket over a gun while going in a store to do shopping. Misd 1st degree here. I suggest to any and all gun owners I encounter to get a permit and then it isn't an issue.

Since I had this very issue come up in a stop about 4 weeks ago, I will share with you how it went down.

A pickup is pulled over for tail lights being out. A toothless-grandma is driving (this is Alabama, afterall :D ), who explains she had no idea and that she believes it's a short in the circuit. After running her plate and license, the woman states that she has a firearm under her seat, as well as a pistol permit. The lady was from GA, as was her permit, and stated the had the firearm for protection since she was traveling out of state. A current CCW permit from GA is recognized in AL, so upon us validating her CCW permit, there were no further issues related to her carrying the firearm.

In Georgia if it is in the glove compartment, console or plain view then there is no CCW needed. If it's under your seat it's considered concealed.
I have no idea why this is.

That is kind of screwy. If it is loaded in the glove box or console, you can reach it just as easy as under the seat.

In florida you can have a load firearm in your center console, glove box, etc. but it can not be in plain view. If pulled over both hands on the steering wheel and let the LEO know before you reach into the compartment for the paperwork.

Thank you for all your answers. In Kentucky, as long as the gun is in the glove compartment, it's not considered concealed. I just didn't know how officers veiw someone carrying a gun around in their car. I by no means want to make an officer nervous if I get pulled over during a traffic stop, so that's why I ask. Thanks for your replies. You have been very helpful.
