    can this be reported?

Today, when leaving the bank inside our local Vons, my wife dropped a bag that contained $2000 in cash, as well as a couple of credit cards and other ways to determine the identitiy of the owner. Can this be reported to our local police in case it gets turned in??

You definately want to call the bank to let them know (Im sure you already did that). Also, make sure you cancel any and all credit cards. It may not hurt just to let the police know in case someone attempts to use the credit cards. If the merchant knows they are stolen and calls the police, it will be helpful if the officer already knows the particular situation... At least, it has helped here in the past

that's what I thought. Now here's my next question. I called my local PD to report this and was given the reply "why are you calling us, no crime's been committed" and "we're in the middle of a shift change, maybe you should try calling later" . I was really given the impression that the lady on the phone didn't care about my situation was was annoyed that we even called. I feel like I need to take this matter up with a higher authority than whoever it is who answers the phones. Who should I talk to.

For starters, where are you? Country/State? Might be able to help shed a little more light on the situation for you if there is someone here from your neck of the woods who knows how things like this would be handled specifically for your area.

If you rob a gas station, you're only going to get about $100, but I get to see a K9 dog use your arm as a chew toy. For all I care you can keep the $100.

Same here in NY....no crime at this point. Until the credit cards are used.....civil matter. The property was not taken by force or decption, they were dropped. Thus, we take reporst for crimes. There is no crime here is NY for dropping something in a public area and going back and not fining it. To be honest, you probably would have got the same response here, but we would have taken your name and number in the rare event it was later turned in. Now, once the cards are used somewhere...it is a crime and we will take a report IN PERSON.

We will take a courtesy report for "lost property" if you come into our station in person. They are usually done 99% of the time for cell phones only.....since many companies require you report such. But if you can justify why you need it, e might take it in such a case if you have a need for teh report (insurance claim).

I can guarantee you that they did not say that here in San Diego. You have what is called lost property. You would get an incident number and that is it. Cell phones get special treatment due to the companies needing the case number. Otherwise, cancel your cards and notify the bank.

The only reason I say Guarantee, we have a telephone reporting unit and these calls come in there all the time...
