    My Family's criminal history

Hi. I just picked up and application from a local PD for a reserve position. On the app it asks if my parents have ever been arrested or convicted before.

My Father was arrested and convicted of Aggrivated Assault. Will this hinder my chances of getting the position or not? Why do they ask questions like this?--- my Father and I are different people.

They need to know who you are. It does not necessarily mean you will be ineligible, in fact, it probably won't matter.

Which is worse, Aggrivated Assault or Aggrivated Battery? I just found out that the conviction was actually Aggrivated Battery.

Probably Aggravated Battery. In some places, assault is the mere attempt to strike someone while battery is the actual striking.

Junior, One of my Dad's friend's is a convicted Federal Felon. He defrauded HUD out of a bunch of money when he was doing construction projects for them.
One son is a FBI Agent (prior DEA Agent) and the other so works for NCIS as a Special Agent. They were very open and honest to the BI's and didn't have a problem since they were not involved.

You're not alone in believing that you and your father are two seperate people :D .

If you apply for an LE position, you will be asked questions that you may deem to be "nobody's business." However, I can assure you that due to the authority given to LEOs, these questions are necessary. Just answer them truthfully, and if you had no involvement, it won't be held against you.

The question on the Applications specifically states, "Has any member of your family ever been convicted of a felony? If so, give details below (i.e. name, dates, charges, parish/county, disposition)"

The problem is, I don't know if Aggrivated Battery is a Felony. Should it in this section? Also, what do they mean by disposition?

Thanks for your help guys. I appreciate it.

My brother got arrested last year for selling GHB to an undercover officer.

aggravated (the proper spelling) battery is a felony in Florida, you can call your local agency or academy and verify if it is/isn't. Disposition is the details of the incident.

You need to specify the state in which you live in order to receive an answer to whether it is a felony. Most likely the answer is "yes".

Disposition is the outcome of the trial (ie. final settlement). If he was convicted and the case is completed, the answer is "guilty". If there is currently an ongiong appeal, specify that.

Thanks for your responses. Everything is a bit clearer now, except of course Johninaustins statement:

Is he serious about this? I went through the application and there wasn't anything regarding sexual history. Will that come up in the interviews and stuff? Nothing to hide, just wondering.

It's possible. There were questions of this nature in my background questionnaire, but these type questions may also be asked during the polygraph examination and/or psych evaluation.
