I have a question for a law enforcement professional in Illinois. Is it legal for police officers to work at bar/restaurants as 'doormen' or 'bouncers? This is specifically for the Naperville, Illinois area.

It is left up to each department's overtime policy. Your best resource would be to call the Naperville PD and ask them.

I've worked them as an off-duty detail, where they pay me to be there and for the use of the car, equipment, insurances (which is paid to my agency).

LIke the others have stated, I don't think it's illegal in any state, but with most depts, against policy. Many dept policis do not allow the officer(s) to work for any establishment who's primary money making is through the sell of alcohol. Some officers can get around this with clubs/bars where the main amount of money being made is at the front door, and not with the alcohol. We have several establishments who charge $5/$10 at the door, and have penny or free beer till 11p or midnight.

Our department doesn't like it but it's not against policy to work security at a bar. It is against policy to work a secondary job at a bar (like bartend), have interest in one or own one.

We can't have anything to do with tow companies, ambulances, taxi cabs or anyplace that serves liquor. That includes bouncing. But that's dept policy, I don't believe there's a state law regarding it.

One thing about working bars...nothing will get you into Internal Affairs faster then working off duty at a bar. I can attest to this from experience.

That is weird about ambulances. Actually, our officers are encouraged to look at Private ambulance services to keep their EMS skills up to par. I couldn't see how that would conflict with their LEO status.

Thanks for your reply. I was curious because I saw a plain clothed man flash a badge to another man saying that he was a cop, but I know he is also a doorman at the Key Wester in Naperville, IL. Hmmmm. Thanks everyone!
