All new cops want EVERYONE to know who they are ( the bumper stickers, the shirts, hats, jackets etc) , the rest of us are happy and secure in knowing that other cops we know will recognize us off duty but the rest of the world will not have a clue.

My "DUMB" comment may have offended you, but if that is what it takes to make you realize what danger and problems you are placing upon your self by wearing it.

It comes down to your boyfriend who must have missed a day in the academy when they talked about off duty survival. Being armed and wearing the shirt is one thing, letting your unarmed girlfriend wear it is completely assinine especially living in today's society.

Call it harsh.....call it what you want, but we see what the evil people in society are capable of while you live in your glass suburban bubble never realizing what is occurring in your community you call home.

We just don't want to see you become another victim just because you like the shirt. Sorry, if us cops actually caring about good people bothers you.

Why is it so impossible for some of you to give adivce without being so harsh? Why can't you just loosen up for a few minutes while you respond to someone's question? Yes, I came here. I didn't TELL you how to treat people. I asked if you could be nicer because even though I've gotten some good advice, it doesn't feel very nice to be treated like a POS and that's how you make people feel sometimes...

My dear young lady, I am sorry if we offend you, but this is how we speak to each other also. If we do something dumb, we expect one of our partners to point it out to us again so we don't end up dead. As the future wife of a cop, you really do need to get a thicker skin. If someone telling you something that you did was "dumb" makes you feel like a "POS" than it may be you that has the issues and not us.

I've been reading this thread and don't personally think anything that you did is dumb, you probably don't know any better. But your boyfriend needs to get a grip on reality and realize what kind of problems he is setting you up for. You seem to have been rattled by some security guard in a mall.....Imagine if that had been a group of thugs that had followed you out to your car from the mall and wanted to question you about your shirt instead, then you would have had something to be rattled about.

And no, we don't ever "loosen up for a few minutes" when we are responding to officer safety type questions, we simply don't have that option if we want to keep all of our parts attached to our bodies.

I'm guessing that your definition of "harsh" is overly broad.

Let me give you an example of MY definition.

"Apparently you are dumber than a bag of carrots, and when given good sound advice you asked for in the first place, (information intended to keep you in one piece) you whine like an old Chevy transmission on it's last legs, about pathetic little issues such as the word "dumb", or how the concepts are presented.

I'll tell you what. Wearing the patch and sweatshirt is a OUTSTANDING idea, you should do it often. Further, you should do it whenever your boyfriend is NOT there, and alone in such places as shopping malls, bars, deserted parking garages, and your city's crackwhore district. Carry lots of cash and jewelry to enhance the effrect. Your admirers will be legion".

There ya go, would you like to read my definition of a whiny, juvenile, twit-headed female?

Jeez John. I think you need to calm down just a tad. I never said I didn't appreciate any of the advice given. In fact, I truely appreciate the advice. I just don't see a need for the tough guy attitude on the internet. It's bad enough most people have the wrong ideas about LEO's and with my boyfriend now an LEO, I'm constantly defending them. I know I don't need to because LEO's know what they do is extraordinary and don't NEED people to like them. I just don't understand the need to be so rude and insulting to simple questions? I guess I might as well give up on this thread because I can tell it will just go around in circles. But if you truely enjoying helping people, at least try and give the people you help a little respect.

Thanks again for all of the advice guys!
