Do you get to pick your rookies for the FTO program or do you just draw out of a hat? Just wondering, I've gotten mixed responses here. Seems some people get to pick and some are assigned a rookie.

I'm Hub McCann. I've fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile, and tribes of natives no white man had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, killed many men and loved only one woman with a passion a flea like you could never begin to understand. That's who I am. Now, go home, boy!
They're assigned.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine
My Little Buddy
Ours actually cycle through four different FTO's.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.
I never picked my trainees, they were assigned to me by our Training Department. My first one was out there like Pluto, I mean really. This fella swore that he could smell radiation coming from our computer screens, and sat away from the monitor with the keypad streatched as far away as the cord would allow. Another quirk was that in El Paso, it gets hotter than a monkeys *** after high impact aerobics, and this guy would wear a winter coat all day long completely zipped. To top off the strangeness, he kept his lunch in those pockets, his food had to of tasted like crap after marinating in the ambient temp plus his body heat adding to it. Aside from him, everybody else was fairly normal.
"Kid, I've sat on the department ****ter longer than you've been a cop." (CatDoc to Chevy SS, the single greatest post ever on RP!)
Moon Pies and RC Cola make me happy
They are assigned and rotate between FTO's after two weeks.
l will track down the real criminals as soon as I'm done with you---sign here X_____
rotate through 4 fto's, through 4 3 week cycles
Drive it, Like you stole it!!
They are assigned, as the other Officers said. I have some mean ***, big FTO's. I love them! :D
They rotate us here too, still have awhile 'til that happens (4 months) but I'm trying to get all the info I can. Also, 3 of our FTO's are canine units. Is it pretty common for them to be FTO's? I hope I get to work with one of them. I know, don't try to pet the puppies, I saw what happens when you try last thurs. when they did a demo for us. Those dogs are crazy/bi-polar.![]()

It's not uncommon for K-9's to be FTO's. FTO's are selected by their department based on their experience and training.
We rotate ours too. And they get assigned by the FTO coordinator. They go through 4 phases:
Phs1: 3 weeks
Phs2: 5 weeks
Phs3: 5 weeks
Phs4: 2 weeks (FTO is in plain clothes)

Train for perfection...Luck is NOT a tactic!
Don't mistake my kindness as weakness or restraint as fear.
Ours are assigned to us for 10 weeks, with some of the people i've trained i've often wished I could pick them first![]()
A snout has told me he's got a set of nostrils, so go and get a W so we can spin his drum to see if he's got any monkey gear - The Sweeney.
WHen I did FTO ( 1991-2001) I had no choice. The first 7 yrs I was the only FTO .
We now have 3 and they take them 2 weeks at a stretch.
Creeper Cop
Our rooks go to different FTO's on a weekly basis. 5 weeks police, 5 weeks firefighting rotating to all 3 shifts.
How unfair :( they are just misunderstood and in need of some TLC !!!Originally Posted by decuervo
