    1.They can't breathe.
    2. It depends on how long you can hold your breath, then they pass out and suffocate.

They can stay down anywhere from a couple hours to years depending on the temperature of the water and where they go down. Sometimes they don't sink for very long at all, especially in warm water. In cold water, like the Great Lakes we would recover floaters that drown in the fall the following spring, like 6months later. There have been bodies found in areas of the Great Lakes like up by Duluth MN that were in a ship that sank in the 30's and the body was still inside, partly because it was in the tug so the currents didn't push it around and partly because at the bottom it is always 34degrees so it never got warm enough for the body to bloat. The body decaying causing the micro organisms to create gas and therefore causing the body organs and cavities to fill with gases and bloat is what causes the body to float to the surface, then if it isn't found in a period of time those gasses escape through openings in the body as well as through new holes as the flesh decays further and they sink again and may never be found. I have recovered numerous bodies and they are all a bit different but the big difference is the environment. In the Great Lakes and internal lakes you usually only have the temperature but in the ocean you also have the acidity of the water and all the critters. Sometimes the critters do such a complete job that the body may not float at all. It really depends.

Brain damage occurs within three to five minutes. It doesn't take much.

What Chewy said. Here locally with an 84 degree surface water temp you can expect a floater to rise within about 2 days, depending upon someone actually seeing them go under in the first place. (We have a lot of those "George isn't on the boat anymore. I think I saw him at midnight" type scenarios).

Last year had one surface right beside the dive team's boat as they were gearing up. Almost always they'll be within a couple hundred yards of where they were last seen unless there is current. They'll hang up under a dock or bend in the river in that case. Of course the deeper the water, (Lake Travis goes to 180 ft in places) the colder the water at depth and the longer the wait. I have no doubt the lakes here hold undiscovered bodies. A lot of the local lakes are inaccessible to divers and whatever the reason, (cinder blocks or natural causes) the bodies don't float.
Don't try and outweird me, I find weirder things than you in my breakfast burrito.

I take it you want to bump someone off and think this is a good way, cutting their brakepipes is quicker and a lot less hassle.

No, bill, it's not like that. I got a PM and it involves a missing friend.

I don't know that apologies are necessarily in order; I just wanted to mention the fact that per my PM with her it is claimed and sounds to be a legit incident involving a friend so I wanted to head off any other talk straight away. After all, we all have seen how things can go on RP once one or two people start the whole "you're just doing this to be obnoxious" type talk :p

    Unhappy RE:Drowning

Thank you Chewy. Yes I have a legit thing here. Our local police dept. seems to think that he is still alive and someone is keeping him. I would think that by now he would to have had to come out of the woodwork some how because he has seizures. That is what the medication was for that he ingested along with the alcohol. You stated that time was a big factor and so would be rain and wind. What about industrial chemicals like dioxin and ammonias being in this river, would that have an effect. Also if you can direct me anywhere that I could read up on these things it would be so greatly appreciated. He is only 34 years old and his parents...... well need I say more about them. I would go looking myself but I haven't the slightest idea where to begin. The police have almost stopped looking for John on the pretenses of him dieing and are concentrating on trying to find him hid out somewhere.Wouldn't he need to have his seizure meds by now. Thank you once again for helping me. You will never never know how greatful I really am

Chemicals would also have some affect on the dogs but it depends on the concentration of odor. I would just do a google search, I don't know of any sites of hand that would help you.

Well Chewey My heart is very heavy at this moment. I do believe that my firend Jonathan Robert Craft was found floating next to the bank several miles from where it was suspected that he went in. I guess it is safe to say that the hope has now ended.
I juat want to thank you and everyone else that answered the questions I had.
May God Bless each and every one of you and keep you safe.
    Once again I thank you.

Unfortunatly, with what you gave me I expected as much. I am really sorry for your loss. At least there is the closure of knowing it has happened rather than not having a body recovered and never knowing for sure. Everything happens for a reason, we have to believe that otherwise what is life all for? Take care.
