    Different agencies

I was just wondering how do you guys view other agencies in LE.
I know that there are a lot of politics and such, but I really am curious as far as how you guys actually feel about each other. I know that Police Officers and Sherriffs have a bit of a rivalry But other agencies such as Constables, State Police, College/Local School PD, Metro PD (in charge of public transportation where I live i.e. bus)
I know that you all will respect each other and such as LEO's, but how much competition/rivalries are there between the diff. agencies really?(one agency maybe feeling they are better than the other)?

    just curious

There are rivalries between any agency and another in my opinion, but only in the same sense as inter service rivalries...we all do the job...we would all be each others 84's and we would all mourn the passing of one of us. It's the way it is.

But my department can kick your departments butt

In my experience, the only 'competition', 'rivalry', or other differences between agencies has been generated by the bosses, with few exceptions. The guys on the street know that their lives might depend on each other, so they try hard to get along.

If there's any type of rivalry, it's like a sibling rivalry. Where you can pick on and kid each other to death, but if someone gets crossed, then everyone gets crossed.

This forum wouldn't exist if rivalries were so fierce as to extinguish cooperation and respect for one another. Sure petty rivalries occur from one department to another from time to time, but this is the exception to the general rule. In LE, you never know when you may really need another LEO in a life-or-death situation.

We may have an occasional squabble but ultimately, we can only depend on a fellow LEO to back us up. When asked or needed, we drop what we are doing and respond as backup , regardless of the color of the uniform or the patches on the sleeve. Thats the brotherhood of being a cop.

My county is comprised of three small municipalities, State Patrol, and the SO. We don't work with any of them on a regular basis due to the bosses having qualms with each other...on the street level however, we frequently cover each other. I concur with what the rest of the guys said about watching each other's asses, even if you don't like the other Cop, he's still a Cop.

Last summer a department in my area that had 3 officers shot to death while serving a misdemeanor warrant at a crack house. Every agency within 50 miles showed up to scour the neighborhood looking for the ones responsible for the shooting. That day solidified for every LEO the camaraderie that each department has with one another, despite what petty jurisdictional issues may arise from time to time.

Obviously I know that everyone will back each other up on the street w/o question.
Now as LEO when your run into someone from another agency (PO/Sheriff/Constable/Campus PD) do you guys personally think that because of the training involved that you are better than the other? Im sure that the training requirements are different from each agency to the next.

I look down on all LE that I consider a "lower form" of LE than my self.

Lets see, whats lower than CBP...hhmmmm....hmmmmm...kinda drawing a blank here...

Squabbles are generally at the admin level over jurisdiction and/or territory. Normally, the folks at the grunt level get along fine.

Here we had some trouble with the S.O. when we started annexing them out of the patrol business. The Sheriff tried to do some back stabbing by taking over certain investigations within the whole county. Our chief and mayor straightened him out as soon as his backroom crap was discovered.

But the S.O. has always been kind of a pain in that looked down on the smaller cities in the county and treated them kinda badly over the years. They tried to pretend they were the premier LE even though they were 190 man and we were closer to 1,000 at the time. That's one of the reasons they disappeared, everyone got a little sick of them and decided to just annex them away. Now a couple of the cities they pushed around are now bigger depts than they are. They have some wilderness to patrol, but mostly they do court guard, corrections and prisoner transport.

We've had a good relationship with the state, such as it is. We really don't interact all that much, but when I've done it, it was always positive.

I have no problem with the locals, as long as they bring my coffee hot, and my donuts glazed, we won't have a problem.

On a serious note, I have been involved in a task force where we had members who had different ideas where an investigation should lead to. I don't judge an agency by the acts of the person, I only judge that individual. But as everyone mentioned, we are all on the same side and there are the common cat fights, but all in all, we are here to put the bad people in jail, plain and simple, and that is something we can all agree on.
