I respectfully disagree. Ammunition manufacturers have done 20 years of ballistics research and improvements since the 80's.

Everything I've read recently (last year to this year) points to the higher quality 9mm loads (Winchester Ranger 127GR. +P+ SXT for instance) to be just as effective in inflicting tissue trauma. Add to that a higher velocity, a lighter recoil for quicker follow-ups, and a greater magazine capacity and I believe the result to be a very effective LE caliber.

The current generation of 9mm round is not even in the same league as a 9mm round manufactured as recently as the 90's. According to everything I've read, they're really that much improved. Definately not your father's 9mm.

Not one bit of difference between them. You cannot determine caliber by autopsy, wound channels all look exactly alike. Now, you CAN tell the difference between hardball or hollowpoints, but that's just about it.

I carried a 9mm for years, switched to a .45 just a couple of months ago, though not for caliber reasons, I just want an all stainless duty gun.

My caliber of choice in gunfights is 5.56 mm anyway.:D

Gotta disagree with you on that one. As I stated in my previous post, we had a suicide by cop who was shot by 9mm, .38 and .45. There was a significant difference in the damage done and all were hollow point. A guy from training came to the autopsy and was even surprised by it. It was my case and I was there too. The .45 has a lot more hydrostatic shock when it hits the person, it's not just a piece of metal going in and out.

Well, thanks for the input, y'all. I thought I wanted a mini Glock in 357 SIG, but finally ended up getting a 40 SW Sigma, and saving a lot of money ($299 brand new). Hope it shoots reliably!

 You bought a Sigma? Is it brand new? I hope it works for you. Most if us would have waved you off from that purchase.

Yup, brand new. I have read up a lot, and it seems they had problems several years ago, but the newer Sigmas are supposedly really good. The latest American Handgunner magazine for May/June did a torture test on a 40, exactly like mine, and shot 3000 rounds in two days without any failures. Of course, I may have gotten a lemon. I'll be going to the range in a couple of days, and I guess I'll find out by experience. Hope I got a good one!

There is a reason they pay the magazine to review their guns..........there are certain magazines where the article is nothing more than an advertisement.

WHY would you shoot 3,000 rounds in 2 days???? Better find someone else to load the mags

The magaziine I read said the extractor fell out before they could finish testing.

Same article, but that was the 9mm gun.
I'm glad I wasn't on the magazine loading team! For that matter, I'm glad I wasn't pulling the trigger. It's a heavy trigger, and 3000 pulls...might sprain something!

Well I took my Sigma 40 shooting two days ago, and it did AOK. Everything fed and fired. And I shot a pretty good group (for me it was good) at 5 yards. (If some badguy is farther away than five yards, I'll be running away instead of shooting, if I can.) Found some cheap PMC ammo, too. JHP for 11.95 for 50 rounds. So far I like my new Sigma. Time will tell! Thanks for your input, everyone!
