LE protecting their own safety and family

I have a good friend that recently made and arrest and was threatned heavily after it. He was advised there is a hit out on him. He obviously is very concerned. He is newly married ( 2 years) with a new baby on the way (april) and with all this stress on him right now he is having some difficulty. I am trying to help him by suggesting ways he can make himself and his family safer....

    Unlisted number
no name only numbers on mailbox
not to show his name as a LEO on TV
    changing plates from FOP
getting dead bolts and extra window locks

What other suggestions do you all have???

This is something the LE should know about. Most officers receive threats and most of the folks giving them are full of hot air. If this officer feels that these threats are viable and could be carried out, he/she needs to get with the ADA about possibly filing criminal charges and even obtaining restratining orders. The courts will crucify someone that threatens/harms an officer as far as retaliation goes.

The advice you have already given is good so far.

I know of many ways a person can better "hide" themself; however, I am not going to broadcast that in an unsecure area to posters whose motives are unknown.

Have your friend the cop sign on here and ger verified, and he will get tons of help.

I have to agree with the Man from Texas on this one. If he comes here and gets verified, he'll have access to information that does not need to be disclosed on a public forum. The previously mentioned advice is sound too.

As others have said, nearly all are full of hot air. It makes them feel tough to threaten a cop. In 27 years of LE, I don't know of any instance where a crook followed through. When I worked meth labs, I was constantly getting threats from from various factions, but in reality they were more afraid of me than I was of them.

The only time in my career I was really concerned was when I was investigating other cops for drug offenses. They made me a little nervous.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

We have had a couple instances (1 I know of first-hand) of having a substantial enough threat that the agency moved the guy and his family).

i have dead bolts with deep throws, heavily supported door latches, extra window locks, massive lights, video surveillance, two very loud beagles, and a whole lot of guns and ammo.

i think everyone's been threatened, but they're usually just that, a threat. i think it's also how you take the threat. when someone threatens me, i tell them i'm going to file a report on it, which i do, then i tell them that if i see them off-duty, i will shoot them. don't show any intimidation. criminals love intimidating others. that's why you can tell a felon just by their mannerisms.

I have been threatened several times, however I don't lose sleep over it. Then again I am not working an organized crime task force or large scale narcotics trafficking cases either. Some precautions I have taken are:
1)unlisted phone number and all utilities in wife's maiden name.
2)Talk to family members about not ever giving out your phone # or address to anyone especially long lost friends from highschool.
3)A dog. It doesn't need to be a rot or pit, just something that barks so I can grab by 12 gauge.
4)make sure your spouse has a basic understanding of firearms
5)Have an emergency plan with your family. This should include a retreat area of the house where there is a cell phone , secure door and preferably a weapon. I have children that are of an age where I have explained that I may have made enemies because of the type of work I do and that they need to be aware . I don't want them to be afraid , but kids need to have a plan as well and should be informed, but at the same time feel secure in their home. My kids have been told noone no matter what happens will ever pick them up fro m school other than my wife and I , grandparents or aunts and uncles. The school principal has also been informed of this.
6)I give all scum bags that make personal; threats to me and my family the same speech. "If I ever see you any where in my neighborhood I am going to assume you are there to harm me or my family. People like you don't live on my street , so if you end up there by accident or choice t will be the last place you go. Is that really the way you want your life to end" for added touch whisper in scumbags ear so others don't hear.

I have had several threats but I am very disappointed to say that no one has tried to follow through with them. My key, Always have a firearm in reach.
