Good question. Yes there is quite a bit of paperwork, I think the percentage would be variable based on your department and your assignment.

Where to start, yes there is a lot of paperwork. Everything is documented, a lot is done on computers now, but there still is a lot of writing. Some departments dictate their reports, but more and more are turning to computers.
How come your house has wheels and your car doesn't?

Every location will differ in the amount of paper work and excitement. My daily duties generate 1 Computer stats form to be done just for turning up. If I go on the road there is a handwritten diary of duties to be completed, every ticket is an A4 size form to be filled in and a summons job will generate 7 or more pages of computerised forms. then there is the electronic time sheet, electronic requisitions, e-mails to check and respond to. 2% excitement, 30% paperwork, the balance waiting or dealing with jo public, on an average day in country Victoria. Wombat will have a totally different perspective and we are less than 150km apart.

Bucketloads of paperowrk. Can be quite disheartening at times.
I have the same paperwork as fetom and MORE (but I also get more excitement :D )
We don't dictate our reports like I have heard some US agencies do. We do still attend the scene and handwrite everything. I ticked a burg the other day that was a 3 page narrative, 2 pages of property and another couple of descriptive forms. Got a couple of tickets, like fetom said A4 size, plus notes. A simple shoplifter will generate about an hour's worth of paperwork, it takes longer if you're new.
A drink driver generates about 10 pages of paperwork for the interview and then we have to do exhibit lists, witness lists, type the statement, a summary of offence, attach copies of exhibits, do a stat form for the Traffic Alcohol Section people and attach any priors. (fetom does these too)
Anything more complicated than a traffic matter will be at least an inch of paperwork by the time it is done. Anything involving a search warrant is going to be quite large and very time consuming.
I have compiled briefs that are 2 large ring binders full. I'm sure there are guys here that have done more. Homicide briefs are multiple big trolley's full of binders full of paperwork.
The stress of ths job isn't always what we see and deal with, but the paperwork and the pressure put on us to get it right and get it done in a timely fashion, when you aren't given time to do it.
Having said that, I wouldn't do any other job. That 5% of excitement makes it all worthwhile..
If you rob a gas station, you're only going to get about $100, but I get to see a K9 dog use your arm as a chew toy. For all I care you can keep the $100.

It's not the amount of paperwork that's irritating....it's the amount of useless paperwork. Nobody would really complain about doing a 2 hour report on a good case where someone is going to prison....but it irritates me how many reports I spend a couple of hours on knowing the DA is just going to toss it in the trash and drop the case. DV cases are probably the most aggravating....I'm required to spend an hour arresting someone and taking them to jail, two hours on a report, just to have the victim recant and the DA drop the case. This happens almost DAILY. I've probably made more DV arrests than anything else, and I have yet to go to court on one. I've only seen a couple of them get filed.
Excitement? I get excited everytime I get behind the wheel of that black and white car. I tend to be pretty active, so my 10 hrs goes quickly. I'd do it for free if the department would let me drive the car (don't let them know that...I'm looking for a raise). Originally Posted by Straightshooter

On of the Chief constable in the UK said his officers spent 90% of their time doing paperwork and only 10% out on patrol. I don't quite agree with his statement but it is far too much whatever the percentage is.
