    Search Gloves

I'm looking to get a good pair of search gloves and have 2 brands in mind. The Damascus Halo gloves and the Hatch Street Guard gloves. I was curious if anyone can suggest a good glove that will protect against Needles and other Sharp Objects. Any experience using the brands I mentioned?

Some are advertised as Cut Resistant and others are Puncture Resistant. Are each of these effective against needles and razors?

    thanks....-J

The ones I tried out that are puncture resistant were so stiff in the palm that I probably wouldn't have felt the needle to begin with. I use the cut resistant ones from Hatch, then do a more thorough search with just my barehands after I'm sure he doesn't have sharpies. There are techniques that you will learn (if you haven't already) in the Academy and FTO on how to search while minimizing the risk of being stuck.

I'd tell you about the ones I know about, but it's an open forum and the badguys read these too.

    Understood JR,

I've got 8 weeks left in the Academy, we're doing patrol procedures this week, so I'm sure they will go over that stuff during that block of training. I'm leaning towards the cut resistant ones after hearing how stiff they are. I will be working in a resort town where there are 21 bars in a 1 square mile area, drunk central. We get tons of fights and tons of scumbags who like to carry knives for "protection". Our guys end up rolling around with these "Vacationers" on a regular basis, 100+ arrests on a holiday weekend. I think having more flexibility will benefit me in this situation. Thanks for the info!

Add 11 bars, keep the square mile and that's where I work lol.

Glad I could help ya out, best wishes for the rest of the Academy and FTO...

You will find that the more protection the glove offers the harder it is to apply cuffs. I like to remind myself that gloves are for not having to touch people with my hands….. I use common sense and creativity to protect myself from needles and other sharps.

i've got a pair of leather kevlar-lined hatch gloves that i've had about 7 years. they've saved me quite a bit. there are punctures in the leather that didn't defeat the kevlar to cut me. it hurts pretty bad when you get stabbed with something, but it doesn't penetrate. the worst i've ever gotten was a big bruise or a pinch on the skin.

i don't put my hands in any one's pockets unless i have them on. if i know i'm going to have to put my hands on someone going in, i glove up. if you see me put my gloves on, you're about to go for a ride. i've been in fights and stuff with them on and never had a problem with dexterity. it's nice to fight someone only to find out later they had hep C or something and you look down at your gloved hands.

Hatch makes tons of different gloves. I have some as well that are kevlar lined. THey are pretty thick and make it difficult to write or tear tickets, but doesn't hurt putting them on when searching. We had a "search" thread not too long ago, and like the others have said, you will learn techniques. I never go in a pocket until I do an outer pat-down. ;)

I just wear unlined leather duty gloves for searching. They're the same ones that I like to put on whenever I'm en route to a call where I might have to go hands-on with someone.

I'm not a big fan of the lined gloves due to the fact that you just don't have the dexterity with them. It's hard to find things such as concealed handcuff keys or small rocks of crack when you're wearing thicker gloves.
