I'e never ticketed an officer, mainly because i've never STOPPED an officer. However, i have arrested them on everything from DWI to shoplifting.

I wish I could say that I've never stopped one...last night alone had three - New York City, Detroit, and Winston Salem (All for speeding 91, 87, 92). No tickets, not to say I wasn't mad for having to waste my time chasing them down. But to answer the original question for ticketing other cops. My answer is "No", but it is all relative to the situation.

I, and every other Copper that I know, don't stroke tickets other Cops...unless he's a complete *******. DUI's are a more complex matter (hope it never happens). State Patrol recently put out something to the effect of no more professional courtesy...but I will not get into a ticket war.

Even if I get pulled over and get a ticket...I'll still be the first one there if a Trooper calls for help and I'm nearby.

One of my midnight compatriots just cited a part time officer from another jurisdiction the other night. It was the third time this particular officer stopped the same guy for the same offense….. speeding, 30 mph over the limit. He ticketed him for the speeding and warned him about his expired registration and inspection. I have no issue with this…..was a “special circumstance” in my eyes.

Just like everyone else on the board, I have let some go with warnings and I have cited a few because of attitude or the violation was so egregious (one stopped at a red light and then decided after 3 seconds it was taking too long and decided he didn't want to stay).

Your going to get into arguements with the public/friends who are non-LEO's about the topic. I use to answer that if a citizen (driving) saw a cop tussling on the ground with a perp, the citizen may stop and help. But 99% of off duty LEOs will stop their car and assist the officer. That alone helped me rationalize my decision(s).

Detective Greenly: Yeah, or bringing a really small gun... to a gunfight.

Better be 100% and it is a good rationalization. That's the difference between us and everyone else. 1*

I too have let both citizens and cops go without giving them some paper. BUT,...perhaps the only issue I have, and I know this goes on within some jurisdictions out there, is you have some who think the "only real police" are cops from their own PD's ONLY. Mind you, there aren't too many out there with this mentality but there are some no matter where you go. We have a local agency who has been known to in the past to brainwash their personnel into believing this crap!

I'm all for extending the courtesy whether you like it or not. Are cops above the law? Of course not. Are there cops out there who deserve & "earn" their tickets? Absolutely! But I think you have to weigh situations on a case by case basis. And I, for one, enjoy having the luxury of deciding whether or not I'll extend that courtesy --- to either cops or a citizen! Course, with today's often hotly debated issue with racial profiling, unfortunately, it seems the days of extending the courtesy may eventually come to an end...

Sorry JR, didn't meant to open another can of worms with the racial thing. That's a whole different matter... :( Again, the days of having the flexibiility to give someone, ANYONE, a free ride anymore are seemingly growing short... Also seems like everything is somehow twisted into a racial issue too these days.
