Many vietnam vets who became cops here proudly wore their service ribbons and still do. they earned them and were not afraid to display that fact.

Also gave us non military types an indication of who NOT to mess with too much :D

He probably put himself in for it. He was only embarrassed because you knew he had nothing to do with it...

Actually it was our captain. When I found out about it went in his office and asked him if he ever wondered why the hell morale around there sucked so much! I had enough time to retire by then and besides he knew he was wrong and I wasn't.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

And as for your post retdetsgt, I saw this happen several times in Iraq, its all politics for being an officer, the enlisted guy who got shot twice in the chest (flack jacket and plates saved him), while running to grab his friend who was down, got up grabbed him got shot two more times in the back (again flack and plates) and once in the leg, but finally got his buddy to safety, got a bronze star with a V, but an officer who didnt do to much got a Silver Star. Go figure.
We can't wear our military decorations.

As far as the military, it's imperative that a officer get lotsa awards if he is going to get promoted. Much more important for him than an enlisted man. The infantry majors I was talking about HAD to get a CIB if they were going to make LTC. The problem I had was the way they got it. So the officer corps takes care of their own for that reason. I always took ribbons I saw on officers with a grain of salt for that reason. I bet 80 to 90% you see on a general or admiral are inflated.

And it's true that West Pointers (and probably USNA grads in the Marines) get taken care of a little better. Ring knockers really take care of their own!

I put my enlisted people in for awards all the time in Vietnam, but few were awarded. Some were just watered down though. I knew I was getting out because I didn't have a college degree back then and they wouldn't let me re-up so I didn't care about career building.

I wish we could wear our military ribbons but were not allowed to. That would be neat.

I understand how it really helps promotion, but its still crap. Its like the people who said that Jessica Lynch deserved the MOH.

Im considering calling the investigator about wearing my CAR (thats the one im most proud of) but I have a feeling hes not going to know what the hell im talking about or laugh me off the phone.
