Fairly simple question, are LEOs allowed to pick their own partner after you get hired or do you get assigned a partner? Im assuming you get assigned a partner, just double checking. Also, are you guys happy with your partners in crime? Thanks![]()

I'm in VA, and my dept does not have partners...we work solo and work with a squad. Right now, however, I am on a SET team (selective enforcement team), and I have a partner, and no, I did not pick him. The Captain picked the two of us for the assignment.

I work by meyself 90% of the time. As wombat will probably atest, we can not pick our partners in GD police work here, and get stuck with all kinds of personality clashes. That is until you get to be a roster Sgt and pick and choose your crew. [one of the reasons I went traffic] :D
The times in traffic that I have had a permanent sidekick, our Sgts tried as best they could to match members to best function together.
One crew I was on, the two guys named Dave worked together, they both ahd the same Initial for their surnames as well, another pair had the same surname, another pair had the same requirments for caffeine intake during the shift and the last two were together too keep the Sgts probable cluster *****s in one vehicle {less travelling over the district to solve problems.} My long term bud at that office was partnered with me as we both had a similar taste for working outside the box and creating controversy wherever possible, in a good way though. {Mr fair and Mr Just.} ;)
My 0.0158 cents worth.

My partner is whoever shows up to cover my butt on the call.:D
Don't try and outweird me, I find weirder things than you in my breakfast burrito.

We get stuck working with others alot when we are new. Sometimes it is a different "old timer" every day. You then make your reputation....a buff, a worker or a clueless idiot.
You eventually partner up. Usually you have some say. You usually ride with somebody a few times....asking the other person if they would ride with you and then asking the boss together. They usually comply.
But you can say no and refuse to work with somebody. Our boss's do not make anyone work together who does not want to. That is one good thing.
Sometimes though you just have to. We have 1 guy now who is a greta guy and a nice person, but being a police officer is not a career for him. He is too nice, too vulnerable, and to trusting. He is very apprehensive about laying his hands on anyone. He believes almost any story a perp tells him. He is just a trusting person by nature. Truly a nice guy and friend to have, but he is a danger to work with. He does not have your back for the same reasons and can not see that some peopel are just pure evil. I have rode with him maybe 5 times in the 3 years he has been around. Two weeks ago, my partner was on vacation. At roll call, he was assigned to my sector and car. I went right up to the boss and told him I was not comfortable working with him and would not be OK with the assignment. Due to low manpower, there were few options. We could go out of service and do station paperowrk for a while or go out. I hate being stuck inside and went out. But my Sgt. agreed to back us on every call and let the other units know to do the same, no matter what the job was. We started at 8 am. At 9:45, I saw a man thumping on a woman......the mother of his baby. I took the collar. My day ended right there. I was happy....my boss was happy, and my partner for the day was happy.
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.
We ride solo as well...and do not pick who works the "sector" with us that night. There aren't personality clashes, as much as work ethic clashes. Some of the guys like walking the beat, flirting with girls, and taking calls as they come. Others like to wreck their own havoc and stay busy for the whole shift (more fun, stories are built, and time goes by faster).
We don't have permanent partners. Sometimes I wish we did. There are some people that just make me nervous when I work with them and others that I would work every shift withif I could. Those are the ones who think like me and we know what the other is thinking at jobs we go to. Makes things run a lot smoother.
We work with whoever we are rostered on to work with, unless of course you can find someone to swap that shift with you.![]()
This may be another one of those rumours that circulates the police force, but I think they don't want us on permanent partners because they beleive it can foster corruption.

If you rob a gas station, you're only going to get about $100, but I get to see a K9 dog use your arm as a chew toy. For all I care you can keep the $100.

Every time you hear on the news about people running away from a crazed gunman, someone's son or daughter in a police uniform is running TOWARD that crazed gunman.
The only time we ride double is during bad weather in the winter. All cars are solo.

Oh yeah, I forgot. We almost never work alone in General Duties.

We have several people that partner up. My partner and I have been working together now for 2 years. I trust my life with them. In our dept it generally boils down to "Hey Sarge, Mind if soandso and I partner up?"

Same here, but it has never been "officially" admitted by the job, just those who have rotated back to normal CID from complaints.Originally Posted by Wombat311

When I was on the road, our cars were solo. It's cheaper to buy another car and increase your coverage area/decrease response time. The calls that sound iffy get everybody rolling to them anyway.
