    Blocking off roads

is there a certain way cops are to block a road down, lets say because there are powerlines down further up the road? if they have their lights on and parked diagonally in a two lane highway, only blocking one lane and a bit of the second lane and is not standing outside of their car and do not have flares or any other precautions out, is a driver suppose to know not to pass? I recently got a ticket for this, but i was confused as to what i was suppose to do since i was in an area i didnt know and there was no one directing me on detours or what was even going on. Please respond, i'm very curious as to the answer.

Common sense says taht if the cruiser is blocking one lane totally and partially blocking the other then there is something wrong. Why not stop and aks instead of thinking you can do what you want and drive around the car.

no, realy you've got us all there. We jsut like to sit int he middle of a road with the emergency flashers on to look good and not have to do any ral work. Just kick back and listen to the tunes on the FM band and have a good time.

He's not in the middle of the road for the fun of it. Not familiar with the area? Turn around and go back the way you came.

i asked if there is a specific way cops are suppose to block off a road. i did not ask for the smart remarks, but thanks, it was very amusing. If anyone could answer this question seriously, that would be great. another funny thing was that two other cars after me got pulled over for the same thing. seems to me that if more than one person wasn't sure what was going on, then the cop wasn't doing his job completly. we pay the cops to keep us safe, right? he could have done this more effectively, thats for sure

I'll give you one good reason why he/she may not have been outside their vehicle. It's because many officers are killed in scenarios just like this because idiots (not meaning you specifically) don't know that if a police vehicle is blocking your lane of traffic, leaving only the oncoming lane open, the proper thing to do is to proceed ONLY WHEN CLEARLY DIRECTED TO DO SO. If you aren't sure, then stay put and wait. Someone WILL get to you.
The other day I was working a non-injury accident but it was snowing like hell and the streets were super slick. We had one lane blocked on a two lane highway and were moving vehicles through the scene, one direction at a time.
Well, some bonehead comes over the hill towards my end going way faster that is safe for the weather conditions. I can tell there is no way he is going to be able to stop so I've got one foot in a ditch and the other on the road. I'm motioning frantically with my flashlight for him to stop. As he approaches the rear end of my car, he moves into the oncoming lane (which is open for traffic coming the other direction) and proceeds on. As he goes by, I yell stop one more time and crash my metal flashlight down on the hood of his car. He STILL keeps going and I radio for the guy up the road to try and stop him. He does so and I end up writing the guy for reckless. I swear I would have arrested him for that or maybe Wanton Endangerment if I hadn't already made an arrest from the accident.

A= That's what's known as "sheep syndrome" normally stops short of jumping off a cliff.

B= That's combination of Sheep sydrome (see above) and arrogance or stupidity.

C= Correct, they are there to keep you safe. They also are there to keep the people working the accident/incident safe. Which is why you, and two other numpties were stopped and given tickets.

More effectively, what a telegram to let you know in advance?

When a police car is across the road you get out and ask if you can go through.

Well, the ticket you got should tell you to not do it again so I'd say he did his job completely.

There are times when we can just put cones and flares across the entire road but there are other times when fire trucks, ambulances, and tow trucks have to get in and out, not to mention any traffic that was where the accident happened. If your lane is blocked, it's blocked for a reason. That reason is not to add a little variety to your day, it's because you can't go that way until directed by a LEO

They've got us surrounded? Good. Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards wont get away this time

"Numpties" I'm going to have to use that

One of my favorite things is working low water crossings. They kill a lot of people around here when they flood.

I'll sit at one all day in plain view and write folks that get out of their cars and MOVE THE BARRICADES! So they can drive into the rushing water. Why, i'll bet I've saved the lives of dozens this way.

Besides. Wouldn't want the firemen to get wet:D

Yes the standard for having a vehicle close off the road is to have the vehicle parked either diagnal or completely sideways in the road blocking one full lane and part of the other lane with the emergency lights on.

are you the guy who smashed into one of our patrol cars when two of us were blocking traffic with all lights on and both wearing traffic vests?
