    Hometown?

Where do you currently work in relation to your hometown? In the PD I am an explorer at, five full time officers and a few part time guys are the good 'ole boys of the town and almost all of the other officers were raised within about half an hour of this place in similar little cow-towns. Just wondering if when it finally comes time for me to start applying places, if I should apply with my hometown. What are the pros and cons, if there are any?

Since I live in the unincorporated area of the county, I guess I technically live in the "hometown" for my department (though the area where I live is surrounded by other municipalities).

I live 6.8 miles from the house I grew up in. I still ride my bicycle there in the warmer months to mow my dads lawn

And am still only 8 miles from HQ but I live on the opposite end of town than I work in which is in a different jurisdiction so I don't have to arrest any of my neighbors.

I live 70 km from my childhood home, where my parents still live. I live 1km from the back door to my office.

If you rob a gas station, you're only going to get about $100, but I get to see a K9 dog use your arm as a chew toy. For all I care you can keep the $100.

I live 20 minutes west of my hometown...I work an hour west of my hometown. Besides giving a fluffy oral board answer about, "I grew up here, so I have an interest in the safety of this community", and picking up on knowledge of locations quicker, I don't think there are any real advantages to working in your hometown.

I moved 9 hours from my hometown. Pros, not arresting childhood friends. Cons, being away from family

About 210 miles. Three hour drive. It's nice to work in the public eye where nobody knows you.

The agency I currently work for is approximately 43 miles from my hometown but, I haven't lived in my hometown since '83 so, from where I live now to my PD is 2.1 miles or 3.38 kilometers for the metric minded.

The pros, I can wake up a hour before my shift starts, get ready, stop for coffee on the way in, shoot the bull with someone for a few minutes outside the PD, and still arrive with time to spare.
When it snows real bad I can call up and say "You wanna go home?, come and pick me up then."
Doing alot of OT is easier without the long commute. = More sleep at home than at behind the wheel.

I prefer to work away from my home town. You may end up dealing with your friends, who may expect a break from you. In a distant area, you can start over and establish a professional image, without the baggage from your youth.
