    Career Questions, Please Help

I am looking into becoming an LEO, but I wanted to know the availability of other LE jobs. For example, how could I get into a Gunsmithing/Armorer job in the LE community? Thanks in advance, I appreciate it.

    1. You'd have to become an LEO. and fill out the applications for whatever classes you're interested in.
    2. Usually you'd have to become a firearms instructor, and also go back to the academy for instructor development classes & certification.
    3. The PD pays your way and sends you off to armorers school.
    4. Upon completion with a passing grade you become an armorer in that particular weapon. Then repeat as necessary.
    5. DON'T expect to become a LEO and "become" something right away. I had 13 years on before I became an instructor/armorer... although it could happen.
Everything varies State to State, agency to agency.

Getting hired is a pain in the rear, long drawn-out draining process in and of itself. Get hired, then start learning first.

    Good luck to you

Working in the armory is no different than any other specialty. You get hired as an officer, work the street for a few years and when such an opening happens, you put in for it. No guarantees and our armorers are not full time. THey are still patrol officers who spend some time in the armory.

mcsap is right on the money. Our Armorers are regular officers who put in a little time and effort to make sure all weapons are fit for service. The dept does pay for them to go through extra schools to be proficient in the weapons the dept carries. And more schools for the tactical weapons (M4, MP5, etc). These schools are usually hosted or taught by the weapon manufacturers. Though, the smaller the dept, the less you may have to wait. Both of our armorers have been on less than 6 years. Right timing I guess.

Every one of the following positions in my dept was filled by regular street officers who put in time on the street BEFORE they specialized...

    FTO
    Detective
    SRO
    DARE
    K9
    Motorcycle Patrol
    Bicycle Patrol
    SERT team
    Forensics Tem
    Motor Carrier Enforcement
    Armory/Range Instructor

All of them except the SRO's and the Detectives are still full time patrol officers responsible to work the street and handle calls.

All of them were sent to departmental paid training to further their knowledge and expertise.

Bottom line is... You MUST be a well rounded street officer BEFORE you can branch off.

And one without any "issues". We have one that won't attend anything because he's constantly butting heads with the administration. I think he gave up submitting training requests.
