Are you talking about transfers within a dept or doing a lateral to another one? If I found a better job, I wouldn't have any trouble at all leaving. After 6 months no one remembers who the hell you are anyway.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

You can't "transfer" out of my dept. You could quit and apply elsewhere though.

Depends on how much the dept has invested in you. I don't think it is easy in any aspect. If you're a good officer, the dept doesn't want to see you leave. Some may wish you luck, others may get pissed. I'm still under a 5 year contract, so if I tried to go to another dept, I would definitely burn some bridges and would owe a few thousand dollars. ;)
so even though you have a contract you are able to quit and go to another dept? thanks for the help. anybody else; in IL?
Technically no. I am under legal obligation to fulfill 5 years of employment because of the roughly $8k in training costs/uniforms/equipment/etc they pay for a new officer. If you leave before that 5 years, the dept can file suit to get a portion of the money back.Originally Posted by Rugkie
Have officers left? Yes...Some say the contract doesn't hold much weight and the dept doesn't want to spend the money and time on attorney's and fees to try and get a couple thousand out of an officer that left before the 5 yrs was up.
I wouldn't leave anyway. Good dept, good bennies, and good pay. ;)
It's as easy as resigning. Well no, it actually isn't...When you're in the backround with a new agency and have to tell the brass, it kinda sucks...I know from personal experience (as in, I'm experiencing it right now).
I am from IL. If you have a contract you will be bound to the terms of the contract.
