Well,... I guess that partly depends upon the department you go to but I would suspect that, refering to departments that have ride-a-long programs, observers are likely assigned to officers that generally don't mind having them. Course, never say "never," as I would assume there is always the possibly a few officers who may be assigned this duty when perhaps they shouldn't be...

I have ride-alongs from time-to-time and I don't mind them, depending who they are. If it's a local Volunteer FF, EMT/Medic from the local Ambulance District, someone in the Academy or about to go, or someone from another Agency, then by all means, I don't mind at all.Originally Posted by 0311Marine
Anyone else, I will probably not take them unless told to by the Chief. That's just me though....
If your looking to get on with a particular Dept., if they allow, I would do a couple of them to see if you are going to like what you are getting yourself into. I know a couple of agencies around here require ride-alongs before they will process your application.
When we get ride-alongs , I'll assign who they are to ride with. Some officers don't like them, others don't mind. I would rather they ride with an officer who will not be unhappy with a rider.
