The action doesn't seem to stop at my department. I do however enjoy the slow days more now then I did when it I first started. As far as what I did to get this job: I put myself through college (busted my butt too to get good grades for this job), read a lot of training books ("Police Officer"); about a month before my tests, I got a copy of the physical testing requirements, and actually practiced each one (i.e. the 1/2 mile run requires running back and forth between cones 15 times...not a straight 1/2 mile, so I practiced that by measuring a distance and timing myself; also did pushups every night; etc. As far as the oral, I had some of my friends actually quiz me like a real oral board.

I hope some of this helped.
